Hello all!
I've got this weird issue I can’t update my maps. I have subscription and I’ve downloaded it from the BMW download manager however, every time I plug it into the car, either the usb slot near wireless charger or even the one in the gearbox, the iDrive doesn’t auto prompt me for update. The usb is recognised by the car, comes up on the devices list however the map doesn’t update. I have tried with 3 different devices with different capacity and all supported formats – still cannot get car to bring up the update screen. I got the car about a month ago, on the automatic map update bit, it showed GB, IE 2017-3. This has now changed to 2021-3, the map I downloaded from the download manager is Europe Evo 2021-3. See pic, one is my iDrive and the other is the BMW download manager I’ve previously managed to do map update on both my 2015 & 2014 F30s using the BMW download manager with no issue. TIA Solution? Turns out with the G30 you need to download it somewhere on your computer first using the "advance" option, once this is done then select your USB stick for the files to be extracted onto. I've just tried this and its worked perfectly once plugged into car. Or if anyone one of you need explaining further. Last edited by shwrb; 12-14-2021 at 10:22 AM.. Sounds like a drive format issue or the way the files are laid out on the drive.
I believe the car expects FAT32 for iDrive 6. We don't get the download manager on this side of the pond so I don't have direct experience with it, but if it doesn't clear and format the USB automatically I would try formatting it as FAT32 then loading the map data. If it does and it is all setup as expected, but the car still has an issue I'd try another USB drive. |

Ok let's try and help. There are two ways you can update maps. OTA and USB. OTA is prompted in I drive. USB is downloaded, at least in the UK, from the download manager.
First check what subscription you have in connected drive. AFAIK the two are not the same subscription. The map you have in I drive is very out of date ( we are on 2021-3) but interestingly the version number of the car's software looks to be one of the latest at v201531. I suspect there is something wrong at the server side with BMW as the map had not been updated but the software has. You might want to get this checked with the connected drive team before they all go home for Christmas. Phone them up and get a ticket or email. I find they respond quite well. One further diagnostic for me is what happens if you click on the highlighted automatic update. Does it try to update or is it just info? I ask because OTA had never worked for me. I'm not worried as the OTA maps are only UK and Ireland but the download manager is whole of Europe. In conclusion I think OTA had given you or is offering uk and ie update to 2021- 3 the latest map. That is what your subscription is for. If you have bought The full map update then go back to bmw and tell then it's not working. They can throw a switch and reboot on the server side as they did for me when my download manager usb subscription didn't work. One more point had anyone tried to bypass the official map upgrade route in the past? Last edited by Dephead2004; 12-14-2021 at 01:56 AM.. |

I think I have found a working solution, I've tried it and it has worked. Previously in both my F30s I've downloaded straight onto usb and its had no issues, it would extract onto the usb and I plug into the car - it updates. Turns out with this one... It downloads the file first and then you need to manually choose an extraction folder/device. I've seen the screen where it had a drop down menu to select device list, it also goes onto mention this map will only work for my VIN and if I need to use it for another vehicle then I'd need to download again for said vehicle, but I've always just dismissed it because at the bottom it would say verification complete So I downloaded it onto a drive on my computer using the "advance setting" once that was done, it prompted me to select a device for it to extract onto, it extracted onto my usb stick and i've managed to update maps. I did the above and my map is now on latest (image below) ![]() bit of ![]() |

USA OTA Map update issue
I’m in the USA so maps updates using download are not available.
I bought a used 2020 230i convertible a year or so ago and am enjoying it. I just realized how out of date the maps were and confirmed it still had the original 2019 maps. I confirmed that the car is supposed to get OTA map updates through next year but that obviously isn’t happening. After MANY calls with bmw I’ve been told that: 1. If the baseline map isn’t continuously updates subsequent updates are too large and no OTA updates are performed. 2. BMW will not provide a new baseline map so that OTA updates can resume. 3. The only way to get the baseline map is to go to the local dealer who wants $365 to load the map. 4. Suggested going to software updates on bmw.com site but that goes nowhere. I find this frustrating since their system was supposed to automatically do OTA map updates for 5 years at no cost. I feel like they should provide a new baseline map free of (or at minimal) charge. BMW has, at numerous levels, shown no interest in working out a solution for me. So I’m stuck with old maps, $365 at dealer, or 3rd party map purchase. I’d love to hear back from forum members what their experience has been, whether I’m just out of line with my expectations, or suggested solutions. |
