Lost CarPlay - Navigation won't load

So I had Carplay activated by a 3rd party a while ago and everything worked great. Install was via Feature Installer. Recently car went into the dealer for steering rack replacement and they basically reprogrammed every module in the car, effectively wiping outy BM3 tune and Carplay. Here is the shitty part, dealer kept getting stuck with the head unit update due to 3rd party carplay. They are unable to update maps and therefore navigation is stuck on loading and they said I need to remove the 3rd party software first.

I'm confused what to do, how do I return the head unit to OEM so the dealer can compete the navigation map update? Current version on head unit is different now than it was when I installed Carplay.

Watching with interest.

This sounds very similar to the absolute nightmare I had with the dealers when my iDrive controller was replaced. I don’t know the full car history, so perhaps previous owner had other things done, but I had SLI enabled and when they went to code the iDrive controller they ended up with issues resetting the head unit. Car ended up off road for 5 weeks before having all modules recoded through an IRAP session with BMW Germany.

To be honest, much as I want my SLI back, I’m too worried of the same rubbish happening again, so very curious what the ‘way out’ is when this happens, as evidently dealers don’t have a solution.

Ideally the solution would be to restore the head unit to OEM level which would unblock the dealer from doing navigation updates.

You can do this with Protool. Ask the support team for help. They may even offer to remote in and do it for you.

I take it Protool is only available on Android and iOS, I'm not seeing a Windows version. Would be easier on a laptop for remote in...

Thanks Joe I'll look into it when I have time. Have to record everything I lost.

The only platform for Protool is an android device. I am an Apple guy, but I went out and bought an Android tablet to run it. That is the only thing I use this tablet for. Pretty cheap Walmart special.

Understood. I'm an Android guy so I used my phone to test connecting and non issues.

If you get Bimmergeeks to help you out, they will remote in via a Windows machine.

Will give it a try if I get to that point. Want OEM navigation to work and idrive in original state and somehow backed up before I do Carplay back again. I say that cause I cannot find a definitive answer on if ordered via online connected drive if it will work. Even the dealer could not answer me, specifically their product specialist.

If you run a radar detector, there are some great Android apps that you can install. Just a suggestion to get more out of your investment.

Dealer refuses to refund me the cost of the map update the tried to do and were unable to. Cost of somewhere around $400 (I need to check invoice). They said they cannot refund me due to the fact it is already assigned to the vin electronically and cannot be reversed. Returning the head unit to OEM isn't so simple, basically I would need to clear out all modified FSC and use E-Sys to import OEM FSC with BMW certificates is what I am being told.

Jesus, what a mess. Have you contacted an experienced coder?

Yah solution is as stated in my last post. Buy a new code to wipe out modified FSC and then get OEM FSC loaded via E-Sys. Not expensive really but when all said and done I have no definitive answer I can activate OEM Carplay and if I can't then I'd be back to activating via feature installer. That said, all is working now with my 3rd party activation and OEM navigation but head unit cannot be updated and new maps cannot be loaded. I'm okay with that more or less but not okay not getting refunded by the dealer.

Looks like i am in the EXACT situation right now with my car at the dealer. Huge mess. I am sure the techs are having a blast as am I without my car.

Can you please elaborate on what is needed to fix this? Not sure how much the dealer is gonna listen to me explaining all this either.

Thank you

Not sure if I understand which problem you are having, but.....

If you have installed CarPlay (and Unlimited Maps Update, Full screen, etc) with FeatureInstaller, and BMW have run a software update, it will usually wipe any FSC's you have installed.

To get the car navigation back you just have to place the FSC (that you bought) on a USB drive and place it in the car USB port. You need to format the drive as FAT32, and if I recall right, it needs to be at least 32Gb... Then when you start the car it should automatically pick up the code.

It is usually good practice to remove any third party FSC's when taking the car into the dealer, and then put it back again afterwards... Otherwise the car will throw up a number of codes when they try to update it..

To remove any codes, just rerun the FeatureInstaller and it will ask you if you want to return to OEM if it detects that the FSC is already on there..

Unless the car is running software from 4-5 years ago, any software update blocks bin file uploading via the USB port. Need to plug into the ODB and flash it that way with a laptop and an executable.

thanks for the information guys. I told the dealer yesterday about the 3rd party flash and that they probably arent going to get it fixed with normal methods but they arent really going to listen to me of course. they said they were going to try one more thing today. i just want the car back, with the information in this thread it seems like i can flash back to what i had with no issue. Just that I wont be able to use the usb drive method. I brought the usb with me today thinking im slick and would update in the dealer parking lot when i pick the car up but i guess ill need my laptop.

not sure on the details as im not in the shop with the techs and only getting info from the advisor but maybe usb flash will still work since sounds like they werent able to update so maybe the software for that module is still the older version which accepts usb flash??

As long as the system functions as normal and i can update back to my 3rd party carplay i dont care. purpose of my dealer visit was not for a nav update. car was updated for dme and then they ran into problems with the nav

Nah, that only refers to putting the FSC's into the system, where the old method of doing it through USB doesn't work anymore (should be done with FeatureInstaller).

The USB method I am referring to is only to update the navigation code. It will actually tell you to do this when you try to start the navigation.
