Need someplace to vent my rage

The day I ordered my X4M, my SG Forester blew the head gasket on the right side. These gaskets have 200K miles on them after the first set failed at 80K. This was a car I was giving to my daughter for college - that's another rage for another time, but the $4700 repair bill could not have come at a worse time.

Then, my wife's B9 Tribeca needed some work, so I did it myself and dropped about $600 - not too bad. Ant then a set of tires. OK. Took it in for an alignment today and an oil change, and got really bad news from a financial aspect. The car had sat and was barely driven since my wife's MS stopped her from driving any longer. Evidently, in the last month both inner CV axle boots failed and slung grease everywhere - $1600.

Front cover oil leak - gonna wait on that one, $2600 because the heads have to come off to reseal the 3.0L upper oil pan with the front cover R and R.

Oil cooler leak - R&R, $490.

Exhaust has to be dropped to reseal the oil pan, $425.

Today's bill - $2970.

Did I mention that the washer went out last week, and it cost more for the inner drum, bearing and housing than a new washer? So new washer and dryer - $2300.

Sheesh... Had to drop like $10K in the last 6 weeks. Crazy, emptied the savings account and then some.

That's really frustrating to hear. Sorry about your luck. Not to be that guy, but I have to ask why you're ordering an $80,000+ car if spending only $10k will "empty" your savings account.

Subaru drivers seem to live in their own weird world. It's like a cult where they all profess love but are always angry and complaining. What you're describing is called life. This is what we all go through. Welcome to the real world, seriously.

Did you really expect your 200,000 mile car to not have problems?! I think you drank way too much of the Subaru Kool-Aid thinking that they're going to stay on the road forever and you're going to be passing it down to your kids and they're going to be loving and kissing it because it's full of love and little doggies and puppies and unicorns and rainbows. One of the criteria I have for my kids is that they never marry a Subaru driver because they're all batshit crazy.

And now you're buying a BMW? Do you think that it will not have issues at some point? Regardless of the car, it's a machine like an appliance. It needs to be maintained and will break down like a washer and dryer.

Anyway, I'm just happy you're getting away from Subaru and I hope that it'll make you a happier person.

Old one was no longer efficient - both of these units were 20 year old Whirlpool Duets.

Don't get me started about the three trips it took for Home Depot to install the new ones!

I think you failed to understand the point.

No, I don't expect all cars to last forever. And I was OK with Subaru until failed CVT's and oil leaks. I fully expect and anticipate that the new Bimmer will break and it will cost a lot of $$$ to fix.

I just dropped $10K cash on my X4M order. All of these other purchases were cash as well. It's just been a bad 6 weeks.

Truthfully, I could have fixed the Tribeca for a grand out of pocket. But I'm too busy to borrow a buddy's lift and put three days in it. I'm on the road installing 2 assembly lines for Toyota and Honda simultaneously. So no time to do that.

Edit:

I went back and reflected on your post. I think it's a little insulting - and I don't have thin skin.

I've been turning a wrench since I was about 10. That's 50 years of maintenance, whether it was lawn mowers, or musclecars, or race cars (SCCA, 1980's), or USAF F-4's/F-16's, or robots, industrial controls, and machines as big as your frickin' house.

Subaru's are not bulletproof, I don't have a dog, and I hate rainbows and unicorns, painted or otherwise. I liked Subaru because of their WRC heritage. The BMW purchase beat out a new Lexus F-Sport by a razor-thin margin.

I'm one of those pricks that hates leaks, loose fasteners, and sudden odd noises, be it from a piece of equipment or a vehicle, and so I fix everything when it breaks - house, cars, machinery, etc. So yeah, I know about maintenance.

I figured the Forester was at the end of it's life and would be a good safe car for my teenage daughter - free, runs, and I don't give two shits if she wraps it up as long as no one else is hurt and she survives the crash in one piece.

It was over $40K middle of May... New deck and painting the house took $20K.

My new company car will be a Subaru. Not. Happy. At. All. I get that I pay minimal for it so thankful about that.

My husband told me I can’t park in the driveway (joking). My friends are asking if they can apply bumper stickers to my back windshield. Might as well start growing my armpit hair long now and buy some Birkenstocks and a kayak to go on the roof

Here in Ohio Subaru are as common as Hondas and pretty much everybody drives them. When I say everybody, I mean all types, ages, kinds of personalities and so forth.

There is a huge following here for the high-performance Subaru, including the Legacy GT, the STI, and the WRX.

Subaru is having a huge issue with mechanical problems right now whereas they were known as extremely reliable before. This change was brought about when they introduced their CRV transmission of which the first generation was extremely unreliable, and the recent generation isn’t much better. A lot of people don’t know that they designed, manufactured and improved (If you wanna call it that) their own CRV transmission. Most other transmissions are made by one or two major manufacturers in Germany for Japanese cars and not by the car makers themselves. Hamachi gear comes immediately to mind.

They have gotten boxier, and uglier, and much more of a utility SUV than a nice car to look at. The mechanical reliability issue and the new smart screen in the middle of the car that is oversized drove me away from the vehicle plus the big push on everything vegan, “we are so environmentally friendly“, the dog commercials, everything else is just not me.

While I was at the dealership today, I saw two people told that they needed new transmissions. Of course they are stunned because their cars are fairly recent, so that’s a pretty scary reason to stay away from the vehicle at this time.

The extra long armpit hair is overrated. I wouldn’t suggest it.

And put some moles on your face or buy a long prosthetic nose. I have never seen a good looking Subaru driver...ever. Also, make sure you buy either alt-left or alt-right bumper stickers. Definitely nothing rational or moderate. But please have paw prints and love plastered all over the car.

True story: One of the companies I own is a media company. I was at one of the major auto shows interviewing reps from Subaru. I asked them why should people buy Suburus when other cars beat them in every category. No joke, they said with anger, "because we have love and dogs at the auto show". And yes, even the reps were unattractive lol.

I can see it coming off that way. It wasn't meant to be. Just blunt and real...kind of like how I would talk to a friend. And I was adding some humor about Subarus. I saw an opportunity to make a little fun of a Subaru owner and I took it. Can't blame me, right? It sounds like a tough few weeks for you though.

I recently had to repair a blown engine ($40k+), 2 new sets of tires (almost $5K), new M rotors ($3K), a bunch of little but expensive M repairs, and replace the washer and dryer as well! Total was approaching $60K. So, maybe that cheers up your day as it could be a lot worse.

FWIW, one of my coworkers drives a Subaru Forester with a stick shift, apparently one of the very last few remaining MT cars that isn't an overpriced sports car (freakish, but in our staff group of 7 we have 2 MT cars, neither of which is a sports car, a Mazda 3 and the Forester). I'm not a Subie fan, but they aren't just about sales hype; they have just a little cred from all that rallye racing that they practically kept alive.

I dont know the stereotype about Subaru drivers but do know a guy who is on his second forrestor. Is it every model or just certain models that apply to the stereotype and what is the stereotype?

Also $20k for a new deck and buying a nice car when you have aged appliances and aged cars in the driveway is interesting- do you live in a very rural area OP? If youre mechanically inclined - could you and a friend not have knocked out the deck? Appliances come in all prices if you dont mind a dent in the back etc….

What part of Ohio are you from? But here in Cincinnati, the performance subbie is long gone unless you are a fanboy of TurninConcepts. But 99.9% of people driving subbies are well...you know. So...I can't even remember the last time I saw a dude driving a Subaru around here. It's your typical Subaru owner that has been described above!

Annoyed at dropping huge sums of cash and buys a german luxo barge that is going to cost gazillions to keep on the road.

None of the Subaru costs seem ridiculous for the miles, still cheaper than a lease on a new one. I drive a 17 year old Saab for that reason, way cheaper than anything new, even a penalty box.

Sheesh, everyone is nit picking here

Dude is just venting about dropping some coin that was unexpected that happen to land at the same time of other large purchases. Happens to us all. I suppose putting it on the internet was the mistake; what did we expect?
