Question MY21 (G30) Premium Package Options

I'm about to close the deal on a 2021 BMW 5 series

It has everything that I would want however its missing the Premium Package

I didn't care much for any of the stuff but the heads up display

For those that have it, is this a deal breaker? Will I be missing out? Or would I be ok without it and go through with it. There's always the m340i route.. but the rates..

There's apparently not much to choose from

I have the Exec Package which is Premium + rear shade & ceramic controls. I'll give you a real quick run down on my opinion starting with the stuff that's outside of what you asked:

- Rear shade: i wanted this for the kids but have never really used it yet (got car in late Jan) so it may not be that useful
- Ceramic controls: I am sure they are nice but I can't even visualize them now that I'm not in my car and haven't look to compare them w/ another G30
- Heads Up Display - love using it but imo if I were you I wouldn't lose sleep not having it. you know what it is and if you can get by without it. I'd always option it in.. but see previous comment.. don't lose sleep.
- Enhanced bluetooth or whatever - NFI what this even does tbh
- Wireless charging - lots of people bitch and moan because it charges slow or doesnt fit Iphone 11/12 Max's very cleanly (or at all) but I am a fan. It's awkward with my iPhone XS Max but great to be wire-free. Drinks in cup holder block it though--so it is annoying.
- Gesture controls - gimmicky as everyone knows but I legit like it for quickly turning up volume or turning it down.. def not a deal breaker.

If you are happy with the car as-is and none of those is critical you'll be happy with your car 6 months from now so dont worry about it.

I have had a HUD in my last 3 cars. I have been test driving an Audi & Range Rover, neither of which had them. In the Audi E-Tron it isn’t an option and the lack of the hud (and silly cameras instead of wing mirrors) was the main reason I couldn’t see me driving one and the RR just proved it was a good decision to have ordered it, albeit at a cost of £ 950. I found it really distracting to have to look away from the road to see my speed and sat nav. Also, the Traffic camera warning can be shown in the hud which is great. Using the hud and voice control there isn’t much reason to take your eyes off the road and the Driving Assistant Pro checks to make sure you are looking through the windscreen and not down ‘

I optioned HUD on my G30 and it is my first car with a HUD. I personally wouldn't option it without this feature as I see it as a must have. Honestly, it should be a standard feature anyway (but German brands love their option gates!).

For instance, with the HUD you can drive without needing the voice prompts from the NAV interrupting your media or needing to take your eyes off the road. Really nice.

All that being said... Depending on how your dealer is working out with allocations and the like you might be better off just waiting for MY2022. It should be launching any day now and SOP is 7/1. Sounds like a long time away, but with COVID factor impacts it seems many are pushed far back anyway.

I'd say the rear and side sunshades are nice in the summer when you're trying to limit the heat that the car will absorb in the sun... I like the feature, but I don't tint my windows and I wouldn't call it a deal breaker feature for sure (especially for those who tint).

But to explain Enhanced Bluetooth. It is now standard (or at least it was in MY2020) and it basically is BMW speak for allowing more than 1 phone to be connected to the head unit at one time and allowing "full" bluetooth functionality like seeing contacts in the car and etc. You probably like the features it adds, but just aren't familiar with the enumeration of those features.

I agree with Wyvinho and Logical Apex. Personally, I love the HUD and my two essentials for any car are the HUD and adaptive cruise control. So if you can possibly wait until they can sell you one with the HUD, I would wait. But if you can't, you can't.

I like HUD, but if you use Apple Carplay and Maps for directions, route guidance doesn't show in HUD which I found in the past the best use for HUD when I used to use the cars Nav. It is handy for Active Cruise.

I've had shades in my last 5 bimmers and have them on my E39 and I can count the times I actually used them on one hand for all cars and that was purely to show off to backseat passengers.

I'm a big fan of ceramic controls vs cheap plastic knobs.

No idea what kinda deal you're getting, but If the inventory is an issue here then do yourself a favor and contact a broker from leasehackr.com. They will likely find you a car you want at a competitive price.

Unless its some mind blowing deal I wouldn't get a 5 series without HUD and HK.

Joe there is a button on Apple car plays map screen that allows you transfer the selected route over to the BMW guidance and heads up will work. It's a weird button that doesn't say what it does clearly but I accidentally discovered it before.

I have used it a few times as Google or Apple maps are better for post codes and finding an exact location but I still like the directions on screen.

Will get you a photo when I get a chance next.

The “route turn display” (I forget the exact name) does show for CarPlay in the HUD on iDrive 7 cars like the LCI.

The BMW navigation will be nicer in the HUD with the route maps and all though.

I will certainly check this out. Does it transfer the entire process to the BMW NAV or will it still show the apple map on the center screen and provide turn instructions in HUD at the same time? Hope so, this would make my day.

HUD is a must in my opinion
It's not a gimmick but makes more sense from ergonomics

Once you have experienced it you won't a car without it, makes you wonder why all cars don't have them

thanks for the replies folks
this is what exactly what i was afraid of
the issue is, my car lease is ending and would need a car soon
not sure how great of a deal it is but when lurking around compared to the deals people were getting, i would say its somewhat little better than average?

i have the HUD on my 2018 so it was meh to me but when i saw the HUD and the info it displays, oh boy.

if i were to wait it out, is there news of when the new production will start?
my dealers are telling that the MY22 models will be worst in terms of programs/incentives though

Pretty simple, extend your lease 3 months and wait for the car you want. If your lease is a BMW and you are waiting on the next one to arrive, they will have no issues. Hell, they will have no issues regardless. I extended my F10 lease 6-months and did not end up getting a BMW.

yea, i don't mind waiting, its just that different dealers just been scaring me that there are no cars out there and that the upcoming new cars will not have any incentives therefore i'd have to spend more.

The incentives haven't changed much and have gotten a bit worse since end of last year. There's no economic reason to give one. These cars are flying off the lots. Now there's likely to be a shortage because of the microchip thing. I have no crystal ball but I don't expect some super sweet deals to occur.

The current market is just plain nuts right now.

Used cars are at the most expensive point ever recorded in the US. That is largely driven by the US market's deep appetite for lot buying cars and dealer lots are empty due to the chip shortage and other factors.

I ordered my MY2020 car in 2019 with a deep discount after negotiations. I am 150K% sure replicating my deal or anything close to it would be IMPOSSIBLE in the current market climate.

You're also going to continue to see prices on new cars climb such that even when you "feel" like you're getting a deal there is less of one to be actually had (higher sticker price with a "discount" leading to a higher actual out of pocket sum)...

They simply can't keep the cars on their lots. To give you another way of accepting the current market reality... Cars are now showing up to dealer lots that have been meticulously ordered without options that were ordered! Car makers sends the car ANYWAY knowing that even if the ordering customer shrugs it will fly off the lot seconds later to someone else. Thus it is cheaper to still build and ship it than it is to keep a ordering customer extremely happy as would normally be the case...

My long long way of saying... Negotiate well, but don't expect to be feasting during a famine.

I guess it comes down to your financial position and how much having the car you want means to you. I get that the deals or incentives might not be there at the moment and you might end up paying a few more bucks than your last lease deal, but it's a matter of buyers remorse to me. I'd rather pay more and get what I want. You are the one driving it for the next 39 months. In terms of the inventory scare tactics, don't listen to it. There will be a car for you, trust me.

Joe see images attached the small square with arrow that I have selected in blue transfers the destination to the bmw system so heads up works with directions. I'm at the latest Istep software level so may be different for older Istep levels.

Only works with Apple maps not google maps.

Also are you aware your can have google maps as default in the Apple CarPlay screen that shows media nav etc if you select it once, it remains as default map. I like the satellite image view as default that google maps uses more than the non satellite Apple maps version.

I have used it a few times as Google or Apple maps are better for post codes and finding an exact location but I still like the directions on screen.

Will get you a photo when I get a chance next.

CnSky I'll take that picture of it if you have a chance, for the life of me, I could not find that button you mentioned. Thank you in advance.
