2017 540I Battery Management warning display
The dreaded Battery Management screen warning began to randomly appear upon entering the car around a month ago. Given that the factory batter was still in it after 8 years, I had a new battery installed and registered with the car by BMW dealership.
Well, the warning message is still appearing and BMW told me this AM that there must be a power drain somewhere so they need me to leave it for the day next week. Any and all insights from the board would be appreciated. She has 28,900 miles and is rarely driven but that didn't prompt this warning message until a month ago. Should I buy a Carly (or similar). I used to get similar warnings on my 530e. It was fixed with a software update. Which made sense as the 530e would use the HV battery when the 12v got low. I verified this does occur.
Depending on your I-Step it may be a software fix for you too. The ICE cars don’t have a HV kick over so it is also possible the message is correctly citing a high drain. You can pull your BMW Car Data report and see what it says. Mine lists the load the car detects as aux user loads. |

Thanks. I tried to create an account on mygarage.bmwusa.com and it returns error upon hitting save. Might be down for weekend maintenance.
FYI - the Battery Management warning came up when I opened the door to get the MFG date (BMWUSA asked for it). I'll try registering it again later today. |

Knowing exactly what the fault code is the best place to start, they're pretty descriptive and will point you in the right direction. In my case my charge door sensor kept opening and closing causing the car to not go to sleep. Not a pressing issue as the IBS will monitor the battery charge and forcibly shut down non-essential systems when needed to ensure the car can still start with a standby draw. |

Since your battery is approx 9 years old…I would recommend getting it tested. Or if you have a battery tender/maintainer…hook it up to the dedicated jump terminals in the engine bay to see if it brings the battery back up to a normal charge range. If it doesn’t maintain a charge..then it’s probably time to look at replacing it.
BTW, you have the larger 95R/H9 classsize battery (if you’re going to look for aftermarket brands)…but do give your local BMW dealership’s parts department a call…because sometimes they are very competitive. When I replaced the 105AH batteries in my f06 & F15…my local BMW dealership had the best price vs every aftermarket battery brand.
