Alantara DCT Shift Boot (OEM+)
As promised, here is the official update for those of you who are interested in the Alcantara DCT boots! FYI: I made a similar post on another thread post of mine to update the original members of that chat, so if you see this again in another forum discussion "Alcantara ZHP Weighted Shift Knobs", it was simply to update those members who may have been interested from that thread 👍🏽 ----------------------------------------------------> Alright so this past weekend I finally got around to taking my old/worn OEM leather DCT boot out of my car. ** If you're unsure how to remove yours, simply squeeze around the edge of the boot to pop the frame out of the console, then once free, pull up on the knob till it pops off (be careful not to punch yourself in the face and also try not to yank the wires out) ** - Once I had my DCT knob/boot out of the car, I had to CAREFULLY figure out how it came apart. It will make a lot more sense if you look at the photos, but basically I had to delicately pry the shifter emblem out of the knob (it is only held in place with some adhesive BUT be very careful not to scratch the underside as the black is what keep the light underneath from shining through) - Once the emblem was off you'll see that light board underneath, and how its loosely just sitting in there, I was able to push the wires from underneath to allow room to get to the torx20 screw on top of the trim which, once removed, allows for the silver (or whatever color yours is) trim to be removed. - At this point I was able to see how the leather is simply pulled then glued to the actual knob and was able to start planning on how I was going to do the boot. NOTE: I realize now that I spaced and didn't actually take any photos of the knob once everything was off, but here is a photo of the leather pulled off to sorta give you an idea on how its attached/glued. - Once I had it all apart and was able to see what needed to happen. I laid out everything (minus the knob that the trim attaches to and the screw that holds it on) Here are the photos for that: NOTE: I ONLY de-pinned mine because I plan to paint my silver trim, as the silver has signs of fading/wear (you cannot simply pull the light board through the hole in the trim, it is not big enough, and I did NOT want to cut it to make room) understandably a bit over-kill, especially because I had completely taped the wires to paint it as is, but decided what the heck, the de-pinning took maybe 5 minutes and will make repainting 10x easier! ----------------------------------------------------> - At this point I have basically dialed in the templates needed to remake this design, I will insert photos below. However I want to briefly mention that the photos you're about to see are the ROUGH DRAFT of what the finally product will be. The ENTIRE goal for this initial rough draft was to figure out how to properly fit the Alcantara the same was as the OEM leather to mimic the OEM quality of this boot. ** I am in no way bad mouthing the team over at COBY Wheel as they appear to offer very well priced alcantara options for several BMW platforms, however I did notice that their DCT shift boot for the E9X platform is not designed to flow onto the back of the knob like OEM BMW does, its simply cut off at the bottom of the knob which means you would have to cut & keep that old leather on the back of your knob and only have their Alcantara boot on the bottom. My design is an exact match to OEM BMW in that it completely covers the back of the knob, allowing for a true OEM+ fit & finish. ** - Again this is a rough draft attempt, the final boots that will be offered will be actually glued to the frame and installed for better reference. These photos below are to attempt to show just how well my design works/looks with the integrated Alcantara material onto the back of the knob. ----------------------------------------------------> As of right now, if you're interested in one, or want more info, feel free to PM here, or for a faster response, DM me on my instagram: @e90anthony I hope that whoever is interested in one of these, likes what ive been able to do so far, and if you aren't invested in this, hopefully you can appreciate the level of detail and quality im aiming to achieve. I appreciate anyone who makes it through to the point, ill update this post again as soon as its all installed back into my car within the next few days! 👍🏽 |

I probably could but the trim may have a hard time fitting back into place if the rest of it is wrapped in Alcantara as well. If you have a spare DCT knob/boot laying around that you'd be willing to send my way, I can definitely give it a shot though!

I would say that mine is about as close to the OEM leather as it gets, but yes its possible to get a little tighter, but that little bit of extra slack allows for the knob to be put into reverse without causing issues. |

Really nice work. How much do you charge. I have attempted this before and would gladly pay to have it done. Anyone know where we can source just the bezel without buying the whole shifter?

More Alcantara Interior Pieces!
Hello community! I wanted to share some progress/update photos regarding the ongoing interior trim re-wraps. This time I have finished up the templates for the E9X parking brake handles and have gone ahead and re-wrapped my own personal one.
Understandably, this particular material option being at a location of higher than normal use, I can see why many may not be interested, but from what ive seen so far from the over 100+ people who have since contacted me via FB/Insta/here on the forum, since originally posting about the Alcantara wrapped ZHP weighted shift knobs, is that a huge number of people simply like to cover as much of their interior in Alcantara as possible, regardless of where it is located. With that knowledge, I will be offering to re-wrap these handles alongside the other items I have previously posted about (ZHP weighted shift knobs, DCT shift boots, etc) To hopefully save time and the need to go back and forth via messaging here on the forum, I will list the pricing here, if there are any other questions feel free to send me a PM here, but ideally would rather chat on instagram @e90anthony Prices: - DCT shift boot: $150-$175 (depending on stitch color/option) - Parking brake handle: $75-$85 (depending on stitch color) ** I DO NOT have any extra units on hand to sell outright, so if you're interested, plan to ship your items my way so I can do the work, then I will pay to ship them back to you. All transactions will go through PayPal. If you're into this sort of thing, I hope you enjoy the update photos, but if not id appreciate leaving the negative comments off of the post, im just a BMW enthusiast who loves to DIY things lol Photos: |

I can tell you, now that I have taken mine apart, that the OEM leather wrapped handle is actually cushioned on the top portion, there is some padding material located only under the top strip of leather, so that will also play into why mine has the bigger lip vs such a streamlined design. Im sure it can be remedied with the use of some padding material like the OEM design, but being something that isn't in constant use while driving, only ever when parking the car, I didn't feel the need to go that route since it will only ever be handled fractionally less than other items in the car. |
