Update your own Vehicle Service Record-> uploaded to BMW servers next dealer visit?
I have a 2012 that came with CIC-High Head Unit (where the Vehicle Service Record data resides in your car). It was retrofitted to NBT HU, and now to EVO HU.
If you update your own digital Vehicle Service Record manually to include DIY oil changes, DIY parts replacements, etc...does it get automatically uploaded to BMW from your key FOB at your next dealer visit? Or the car needs to be hooked up to the dealer's service network first to be uploaded automatically? Is the upload automatic?

IIRC, the dealer service rep can read the car’s service record off your key fob, before they ever hook up your car. They have a little desktop gadget that can read the fob. I don’t think it’s recorded into their system records though until the car gets hooked up?

Well..this guide says that if you write your own records to the HU, when you take it to BMW, they will overwrite it from their previous data form their servers. And yes, both the HU and the FOB have your records.
Assuming that when work is being done on the car at the dealer, that latest work/maintenance will be updated and added.

Huh. That’s not my experience at all.
I haven’t added any software/hack to my BMW to be able record my own services, like oil, brakes, etc. I use BimmerLink via WiFi to do service resets for all my ‘due’ services that I do myself. It updates in the car to the HU (and then on to the BMW cloud). And none that I’ve done this way gets wiped out when I bring in my car for service and they hook up to it or update it. I can tell none of my own services get wiped as the reset counters are accurate. For example, my oil change reset count is correct through multiple dealer service visits. The counter reflects I’ve done 3/4 of the oil changes myself. The counter would be very low if it only counted dealer changes. My dealer SA can see my due services ( I’ll get emails) and if I do that service myself, they can tell. They still take and read my fob - I assume because it’ll reflect anything done since they got an update or because there’s other info besides my service history on there that’s useful. BTW, my NBTEvo iDrive v4 doesn’t have a display for Service History - just the due services list. I’d actually like a full history listing for my records, since I know my own are also in there. I had hoped that BimmerLink could show the full history, but it only also shows an ’active’ services list (with reset counts). Does the newer iDrive show a full listing? The only way I know right now is to ask my SA… Last edited by visionaut; 06-27-2025 at 03:16 PM.. |

Thanks for the info.
My car does not have any cloud connectivity, etc. I only have service reminders which I reset myself. So in my case, it's all physical contact with the dealer (if any). My car also does not show any service history. Since I have a retrofit Head Unit, it may not even have my own service history (if any). Unless that is in KOMBI. The video I linked mentions that checking SERVICE_HISTORY in ESys and changing to aktiv should enable that menu item. Will check this in my car.

The SHM free version works well. Tested it with a couple of entries. Saved the file and will add all the BMW dealer events and the ones I did.
My donor head unit actually did have one Service History entry: pre-delivery inspection.
