Lane assist has started to behave erratically

I have a 2017 540 with lane assist. Been using it over the 5 years a lot despite it not being perfect so well used to its foibles.

However this system appears to have developed an issue
It seems to find the road markings more difficult to detect and when it does lock on , the steering is very erratic. To the point it actually feels quite dangerous to use.

No errors messages are displayed

I first thought perhaps there was some dirt covering the camera on the windscreen but confirmed it was all clean

(My assumption is that these are the sole sensors used by this system and not the radar detector under the front bumper use by the cruise control component)

This has occurred on the last few journeys so a restart of the car has not resolved this.

This sounds like a visit to the dealership and as it's out of warranty probably not a cheap fix but wondering if anyone has encountered this issue?

I have not had this issue, but BMW has had gremlins in their cars for many years. What I would try is playing with the intelligent safety setting. Turn things on and off, change sensitivity to reduced and other variables. Not everything at once. See if the software will kick back in if it's software related. It sounds like it given it's not just one thing. If that fails, I would pull the negative battery lead for 15 minutes. This will hard reboot the entire car and all systems.

I haven't had this issue. Sometimes a little jerky but usually when the lines are harder to detect. But I use this feature a ton so very interested. Please keep us updated when you find answers. Why do you think the sensors on the bumper aren't used in this system? I just assumed it used multiple angles to function.

Mine is a 2018 540. This feature was a must have and the combination of performance with the driver assist is what sold me on the car.

Also something I'll be specifically interested in as it pertains to extended warranties

Have you tried setting lane change assist to Reduced?

Don't go to BMW go to a windscreen replacement shop that has the calibration tools. Way cheaper.

I just did this with my one G30 as I required a new windscreen and all the KAFAS cameras had to be aligned, they had a 60" screen with weird lines and boxes and used some software to recalibrate.

Took two hours to change screen and calibrate so only an hour or less for a calibration alone. I would only assume a lot cheaper than using BMW and the shop are pro as they do it daily.

I'm sure they can tell you if it's off.

I had a similar issue with the car struggling to stay in lane keep assist and when it did it wandered a lot more than usual. On my first service visit the dealer said the car threw a code, so they did an istep upgrade and recalibrated the Kafas camera. When it continued to be a problem, they replaced the Kafas camera and that resolved the problem.

I hope your car has some sort of warranty because I recall the part alone would have been stupid expensive if I had to pay for the repair. Assuming your issue is the same. Good luck.

I know I've said it a hundred times, but I'll say it again. I am not concerned with some major powertrain failure on this car. It's this kind of stuff that I feel like will break you on one of these if you don't have any kind of warranty coverage. Electronics/cameras are the kind of stuff that keep me worried.

Yeh I'm out of warranty and so yes not expecting this to be cheap

Really busy at the moment so it'll be a few weeks before I get the dealer to look at

Used it again yesterday and still behaving erratically

Traffic jam assist seems better but that may just be the slower speeds perhaps.

Pretty sure this is going to be a fault with the kanas camera. Active cruise control is fine so I know the radar is working correctly
The cameras are obviously having issues detecting the road markings and when they do detect them , it's very jerky. Drivers behind are probably wondering what an earth I am up to!

No error messages although maybe something is logged internally

Hey bud,

Before you do anything through BMW UK reach out to Simon from Bavarian Coding.

He is the best in the business and has supported me with loads.

Trust me you won't find a better coder period.

Even BMW use him to get them out of sticky situations they can't fix

Tell him Paul recommended him

Thanks
Paul

Did you ever get this figured out? I am having the same issue and when I took it in to the dealer they said there were no errors and everything is working as it should.

I haven't had your particular problem but mine constantly loses contact with lane lines that seem to me to be very visible and clear. It will also sometimes fight me at an exit on a highway thinking that the exit is the travel lane.

All told...I normally don't use it.

Yeah it definitely works better in the left lane. I use it a lot on the interstate.

Aha! Maybe that explains why so many slow drivers (I don't mean you) choose to drive in the left lane. I thought it was because they were illiterates and couldn't read the driver's manual.

Haha maybe so! I like to use the driver assist features and go fast at the same time.

:(

Hello, my car is also behaving strangely, in the same way that some users are explaining, I will add what: sometimes being during the day and totally sunny, I have noticed that the lights turn on and off repeatedly (about 5 or 6 times) at random times. Of course I've taken it to the dealer and they can't give me an answer.

These error codes, I think they have to do with these problems even though the error status is "temporary"

I tried using the lane-keeping for a 70ish mile freeway trip yesterday. Is it normal for the car to react slowly to bends in the road? Like late to follow the curve then overreacts when the curve ends. I have the factory warranty until January so if this is an issue I want to get it looked at sooner rather than wait.

Are the lane lines prominent when this happens?

It's a great feature but it isn't perfect. That doesn't sound unusual to me, but you can always just take it in and tell them you think it's not reacting correctly. If you like/trust your dealer then why not?

For what it's worth, I use it a ton but I always end up guiding the car through turns before the car reacts. I end up doing the driving 80-90% of the time, even when it's on. It's just a convenient crutch/safety feature to make me happy and take some load off, mentally. Where I allow it to do more is in the stop and go traffic jams. Which is all funny because I bought it to do the opposite. I thought I'd lean super heavy on the lane keeping on the highway and never use the traffic jam assist.

Sorry to hear about this bud.

I had a similar issue where I could not activate driving assistance features on my 2017 540i G31.

I hit up Simon from Bavarian Coding he is the best coder in the UK and issue was sorted via software.

Try him first

Thanks
