KW V3 for G30
Hi folks, I installed a set of KW V3 coilovers with my local dealer a few months back. I'm of the opinion that while they are the only dealer in my country, their workshop is completely incompetent.
When they first installed my suspension kit, I noticed that my rear suspension (both sides) would make a spring sound after the car has sat still for a long period of time e.g. few hours. What I gather is that the springs are storing energy from sitting still, and during a move off, there's sufficient room for them to move and thus they unleash that energy and give off a sound. This is especially so when I go over speed bumps and humps. Eventually, the spring sound goes away after driving awhile. After I went back for my first adjustment when the kit has settled in, I opted to lower the vehicle more. I have no idea how much it lowered, as the workshop managed to lose the recording sheet (lol). However, I find that the spring sound is more frequent now. Why I feel they are incompetent is because the mechanics do not seem to have an idea as to how to recommend me what type of settings to run for the coilover. They are unable to test drive my car and figure out if the rebound/compression settings need to be increased/decreased so as to achieve a more comfortable ride. Being a newbie to the modding scene, I have not much experience with suspension. All I wish is for a pretty comfortable ride with good handling -- something that I have researched around and it seems the KW V3 should be able to satisfy. Also, before buying this kit, I have read up on the forums here, and it seems that no one really complained about having this spring sound. Yet somehow, my buddy and I whom both own G30s, have met with this issue after installing with these guys. At the moment, they have tried sleeves and even swapped springs with different spring rates for my buddy. So, here I am now, hoping that fellow G30 owners on this can shed some light for me. Do you guys face the same kinds of sounds from the kit? Is the KW V3, after lowering, capable of achieving close to (or the same) comfort as the stock suspension? Unfortunately, for my case, I did not get the opportunity to try the stock suspension on better tyres -- I bought a pre-owned G30 and it still had the original run-flats on 18" rims. I ordered a set of 20" custom forged ones and swapped the suspension at the same time. |

The bolt for the top hat must be hand tightened u need to a tool to hold the shaft and tighten it. If he used an impact for the top but then it's not tight and the noise you are hearing is from the spring rattling because it's not under tension. I have kwv3 and my car drives immaculate.

I didn't know that someone replied! Yes all parts were properly torqued and tightened it seems.
I went by another suspension shop, and the mechanic was telling me that the main issue is that the KW V3 has softer springs. So what could have happened is that because i went to the lowest ride height/preload setting, that the springs aren't sufficiently compressed. When the car moves, the damper moves faster than the springs because there's a lack of compression. This causes the spring to be unseated momentarily. I raised my rear ride height by like 3-4mm and the sound seems to be lessened. I'm quite disappointed though. I feel like since the manual said I should be able to achieve that ride height, that such issues shouldn't pop up at all. After all, I'm not going beyond the specifications they stated. I've seen some rides on these forums where the wheel arch clearance is really nice such as https://g30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...4&postcount=45 Unfortunately, I can't even seem to get such a ride height without this spring sound popping up on me. |
