There's a car with all that already and selling in Sweden. It's called a Tesla Model S. It's also cheaper than a BMW 5 or 6 series.

No. It's about twice as much as the base price for my previous F11.
And I really prefer a BMW. But since they dont make a decent electrical car, I'm currently driving a Tesla. Hopefully I can go back to BMW once they get their act together. |

I assume all electric BMW will be an i something, so I don't see a fully electrical G3x happening.

The new 5er will feature the 530eDrive Plug-In Hybrid and the all new 5er Gran Turismo will introduce a BMW-Toyota jointly developed fuel cell.

And why not a 520e? Fuel cells make no sense at all. I assume it's hydrogen fuel cells, which means you either have to use electricity to get from water or use some form of fossil fuel as a base. If you go the fossil way, nothing is won. If you go the other way you first use electricity to get hydrogen, then distribute the hydrogen which is quite expensive and then fill it in a car from a hydrogen station and convert kt back to electricity to power the car. Losses in all stages and the need for a new very expensive hydrogen infrastructure to use it as a carrier for electricity basically. We already have electrical infrastructure so building charging networks is a fraction of the cost compared to building a hydrogen infrastructure. And without the losses in every conversion step. But then again, fuel cell versions are basically just compliance cars anyway... So I guess there will be no G3x for me. Guess we'll have to see if there will ever be an i5 or similar with good range. |

As another poster suggests, Tesla Model S is really your only choice for a large electric premium saloon at the moment. But we don't see many of them, because it's severely flawed.

But Diesel might change your perspective...extremely efficient (in your "Burining Oil" category that is...) and more ecological...
Thoughts? I'm really waiting for the new 5GT Diesel... |

Mainly in terms of real-world range and the poor infrastructure (at least in the UK) for charging. No REx option and I'd be too scared to do long distance in it for fear of the charging points being offline, which appears to be a sadly regular occurrence. Don't get me wrong, I love the Model S and Tesla's philosophy but it's not yet realistic in the UK. The BMW i brand is bang on where we are at the moment, in my opinion. The i3 perfect for shorter journeys with REx for longer distance and the i8 which as we know works brilliantly and can only get better as the charging infrastructure improves.

I wrestled with this decision quite a bit before leasing a 528i a month ago. A fairly basic Model S would have cost 73% more than my BMW to lease, factoring in all payments, fees, taxes, and incentives. (That works out to $17,000!) Tesla projects $6,000 gas savings in three years. At 10k miles per year, 25 MPG average, and $4.00/gal, I will only spend $4,800 in gas in that time.
I have high hopes for the 530e, or i5, or whatever Audi Etron models are on the horizon. For now, I am just not green enough to choose a Model S.
