COMMENTS

BMW has launched the pilot program for BMW Wireless Charging with the 530e, capable of powering you up in just 3.5 hours.

Learn about and apply for the pilot program here: https://www.qmerit.com/bmwwireless (currently available only to California residents).

HOW THE PILOT PROGRAM WORKS:

The Required Hardware:

Enrollment in the Pilot Program requires two (2) pieces of hardware.

A BMW 530e with Car Pad Module (CPM)
• A limited number of wireless inductive charging systems are available.
• CPM is installed as a factory option

The Ground Pad Module (GPM)
• Professionally installed/de-installed by Qmerit
• Must be hardwired to home electric panel
• *The GPM is exclusively compatible with the BMW 530e

*CPM and GPM sync through Wi-Fi

The Application Process:

Through a short survey, we’ll determine whether your home is eligible for Wireless Charging or if another charging option is best for you. From there, your local BMW Client Advisor will get you behind the wheel of your new BMW 530e with CPM.

The Cost:

All costs, expenses and expenditures associated with the initial installation, maintenance and de-installation of the Ground Pad Module will be funded by BMW. Once deemed eligible for the Pilot Program, simply contact your local BMW Center for leasing options on a BMW 530e with CPM.

ELIGIBILITY

Participation in the Pilot Program is only offered to eligible customers while supplies last.

PILOT PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

• Residential California installations only
• Available with Lease and Prepay lease contracts only
• Must qualify via the Qmerit Application to be eligible for the pilot program. The Qmerit Application will screen applicant's home for installation and track usage and satisfaction during the pilot
• Vehicle must be charged in an enclosed garage
• Participants must agree to comply with pilot guidelines in terms of installation, maintenance and de-installation of the Wireless Charging Pad in their homes
• Participants must agree to return Ground Pad Module at lease termination[/LIST]

3 Step Qualification Process:

• Survey 1: Answer a few questions to determine whether you generally qualify for the pilot (location, type of building).
• Survey 2: If your house meets the general qualifications, we’ll ask you a few more questions about your garage and electric grid. If qualifications are met again, you’ll receive an email with a confirmation number.
• Contact your local BMW center from Survey 1 with your confirmation number. From there, complete your lease of a BMW 530e with CPM and schedule the installation of your Ground Pad.

That's pretty cool, certainly would consider it if I lived there.

So, I have this co-worker... we all know "that guy". I mentioned this cable free charger that BMW is developing. He responded with, "Yeah, but you're basically microwaving yourself using that!"

Nice technology, but still the same issue as regular chargers - no infrastructure.
I need one of those in my office, one in each hotel and one at each gas station please.

Also judging by how hot the iphone wireless charger gets in new BMW x5, that it shuts off the phone , overheats it - so its hot to touch... I'm not sure i want to do it in my house.

Maybe 300 meters away in case of fire

You realize this is for a plug in hybrid, not a pure EV? And even then you can still charge with a normal cable.

I agree - this is cool!
The house architecture sucks, but the wireless charging is a must have if I ever switch to hybrid / EV.

if they're going to wireless charging it needs to have bigger coverage though, what's the tolerance for how close you need to park on top it?

Are you power sliding into an icy garage? I probably park within two or three inches of the same spot every day.

What are the charging losses involved in such a system?

Keep in mind this is just a pilot program. Need to tackle this before scalable expansion though (public infrastructure targeted).

I attended a seminar and spoke with engineers (internally) from a car company. The issues with wireless charging testing was not only heating up elements inside the cabin (metal knobs, info control, etc.), but also heating up the cell phones and jewelry of anyone inside the vehicle. I wouldn't expect this to officially hit market *too* soon. I'd guess 2021 roughly...

I also believe that it will not charge as fast as a plug-in. I don't see it making sense for those of us with a charging station already. I think I am still fully capable of plugging in the cable.

For pilot program, sure, guess I'm thinking of real roll out (say public garage where people kind park all over the place)

I have a Tesla Model 3 that I plug in every night. It's honestly such a non event to do so, I can't imagine spending my own money on an inductive charging pad. I wonder what the efficiency and speed are compared to a direct connection.

I'd imagine we're a long way from having wireless accessible publicly. This is a home solution, not commercial. At least for the short term. Hence the small footprint/charging area.

It better doesn't.
But I believe you must have a fairly „flat" dog or cat to be able to do that.
A hamster - more likely.
