That's not gesture control.

The screen has a sensor in it which detects a finger coming towards it and changes to a keypad for touch input where the context allows. That is separate to gesture control and cars without GC still have the touch input sensor in the screen.

I don't know what is going on with that 520d as to why its not changing to the keypad when the hand approaches.

My both cars include the Gesture control. The hardware should be the same as I checked it from VIN decoder or it has a little different in minor thing inside. Now I put all my curiosity on software (firmware). Maybe different firmware of head unit can differ the way they operate.
