I wish the car had a dipstick. I haven't gotten under a car in years for an oil change after buying a fluid extractor. Stick the hose in the dipstick tube and 5-10 minutes later you have all your used oil ready to be dumped at the local auto parts shop.

I've done top-side oil changes and have the extractor, too. For the M550i, you have to change the filter from below, so I just drain the oil via the drain plug.

I count up about $86 not including tools. Not having someone strip your oil pan bolt: Priceless.
Caveat: I have a ton of tools from when I raced. Did all my own work including pulling motors, etc. If it's not fun or provides you with a sense of satisfaction, don't do it. Having a quality set of jack stands and a good floor jack go a long way to getting a ton of stuff done on the car. I prefer the Esco 3-ton jack stands. I do use a harbor freight (hazard fraught) all steel jack at home (oversized by at least a ton), so you can get a somewhat cheaper jack.

cost me 86$ too, including the oil filter removal tool. I do it for the satisfaction, also a teaching moment for the kids.
How much is an oil change at dealer or indy shop? im guessing over 200$? |

It's actually under $200, so about $100 more than DIY.

I have a trusted performance shop that only works on BMWs. They've done all my upgrades and all my service. Pretty much any non warranty work. Their prices are the same as the dealer, but I just them more than myself.

I was quoted the $179.95 price for an oil change. That's what drove me to do my own. They also want $170 to replace the air filters.

$179 or $99. Potatoes pOtAToes. Two or three times a year, the difference is peanuts. But I get the sense of personal accomplishment from DIY. For me, drive in, get a loaner, pick up at the end of the day and my back isn't dirty from lying on the ground and my knuckles are bleeding.

Curious as to which premium oil you used.

9 quarts or 8.5 liters is what I see as spec.

I plan to own my car for a long time and have an extended warrantee (I am so through working on cars). I will be doing all maintenance on this particular car through the dealership For documentation purposes. I dont want to give anyone an opportunity to try to void my warranty because there isnt a record of oil changes…or i used the wrong oil…or filter.
No dodge dealer will work on my Viper, So I have to keep all the receipts of the exact oil I bought, oil filters and I also send a sample out to Blackstone labs for analysis… Solid documentation of engine state. FCA have been real dicks about covering engine failures on the vipers. The manual states that you have to change the oil every 3000 miles or six months. If you don't follow those guidelines, and have an engine failure, you are toast. There are times that I don't even put 50 miles on it over the winter time, but still have to piss away perfectly good oil (11 qts) to maintain warranty coverage. I'm not saying that I never pulled the filter off, pulled out enough oil for a sample and sent to blackstone labs for Documentation. The moral of the story is be very careful if you're keeping your car for the duration. The bean counters and lawyers are looking at all kinds of ways to avoid paying warranty expenses |
