It's hard to answer that since it's based on your own experience and comfort level. For example, if you've ever edited the registry of your PC, you're probably good to go with using Bimmercode Expert Mode. If not, maybe start with something simple that doesn't require expert mode like changing your default driving mode, coding auto start/stop memory, or disabling active sound.

Just be sure to follow the instructions because the biggest danger is having the ECU power off unexpectedly while coding it. Also, if you haven't purchased an OBD2 adapter yet, be sure to get one that's fully compatible with your car. The Bimmercode site has that info.

Thanks for the feedback. I came from the VW world and am familiar with VAG-COM coding. I've done some non-expert level coding w/ BimmerCode and have the OBD Link CX which has worked fine thus far.

I'd like to make all of my ambient lights red - can you point me in the direction of where I could find instructions for that? Or is it a matter of poking around until I find what I'm looking for?

If you only care about making all of your lights red, you only need to code one color on the iDrive menu. Bimmercode may allow you to code the first color only (bronze) without using Expert Mode but I'm just working from memory here. The RGB code for full red is FF0000 (Red=FF, Green=00, Blue=00.) Look in the Body Domain Controller (BDC) for Ambient Lighting coding and plug in FF0000 for all of the values in the first menu option - there may be up to four of them. Feel free to share a screenshot if it's not clear how to do this.

I custom coded mine with ProTool. I just replaced Bronze and Bronze and White. ProTool offers a menu where you just pick the colors for the four zones and press "code". I have not messed with four different colors for each zone. That's a little much.

I agree, ProTool is definitely the way to go for coding ambient lighting. Strange though, it doesn't let you code the last few colors on the menu; still need expert mode for that.

I am using ProTool with the bimmergeek bluetooth connector. On my ambient light screen I can only edit "upper" and "lower" layers. How did you configure four layers? expert mode?

Yeah, I remember this question from someone with an LCI. I think BMW may have removed the ability to change 4 zones independently. Honestly thought, even though I can, I stick with two colors and alternate them from overhead, upper, lower and footwell. I think it would look like a Christmas tree with four different colors.

I have a 2023 530e (G30) Bimmercode guys told me that you can not do dual color (contour color) because it is an LCI model. Bummer. It worked awesome in my 2018 530e. But not the 2023. Does anyone know if ProTool can do it? I just bought ProTool, but don't see anything anyplace to change ambient lighting. I'm most likely looking in the wrong place. Thoughts anyone?

I have a Pre-LCI MY 2020 car. Using ProTool, go into the Body Domain Controller (BDC) module and look there. On the "Popular" menu, right on top you will hopefully see the "Ambient Lighting Colors" option. Click "Customize" to select your colors. If you don't see the "Ambient Lighting Colors" option, maybe it's not available for your car. According to my notes, for my car it's in CAFD cafd_00005fa9.caf.105_062_011, Group 3074.

I have problems with ambient lightning on g30 2017.
If I select any dual colour mode, all strips works fine, accept lower one on front passenger site stays white (see attached pictures)
Can this be fixed with bimmercode? Also front passenger footwell light is not working.
I read that all ambient lights are connected to each other so maybe this is the case that lower strip is not working properly?

Do you know if the strips in question were ever replaced? They need to be initiated by the dealer.

Hi,

I have no idea since I bought it second hand.
Strange is that if I select single colour, all stripes works ok (accept passenger footwell which never works), problem is only with dual colour settings, in that case I get mess you can see on pictures I posted in previous post.

So if I understand you correctly, only option is dillership?
Can this be done via bimmercode or esys?

ID 7 can be changed as well, every color of the rainbow and all 3 layers. I still figuring out how the 4th (roof module) layer can be changed as well.

I really like the look of the ambient lights from the first post. If you have any photos of your own, maybe would be worth adding them along with a description of the settings.
