Active Grille CEL

Did a delete of the active grille on my 21 M550, got a CEL… the motor is intact but has no arms, I think it’s spinning endlessly and thats what is throwing up the code. What are my options here? Don’t want to tune the car.

I read a solution on this awhile back. Might be under the "Cosmetic Mod" section.
Do a few searches, you will find it.
IIRC it was a module or something you plug in to fake out the computer.

Yeah, maybe a little strong. Just don't get why people cut them out when there is a 15 year 150,000 mile warranty on them.

Tell me it's not because you wanted to put those blue plastic tubes on the cross bars

I'll be looking out for you on the road. I'll buy you a beer for my sharp tongue.

I am just as confused.

They have an extended warranty, but they also serve a valid purpose. They greatly decrease engine warmup time leading to the engine staying within optimal operating temperature range longer.

You'd think that would be preferred

Oh Apex, we are 100% on the same page on this one. From what I gather, people remove them for one of two reasons 1)because they "think" they are increasing airflow, effectively thinking they are better engineers than BMW. 2) they like the look better and/or want double slat grills which don't work and/or look good with active grills. The people that do #2 sometimes put colored plastic tubes on the crossbars to show through.

I also have a warranty on my drive train but that ain't stopping me from tuning it. Also, I remote start my car for 10-12 mins before driving it. and even after that, I don't push the car for a good 20-30 after leaving.

Same engine as the M5... M5 doesn't need it. Don't care for it, it looks ugly and It doesn't fit with my intakes.

To each his own, but it’s not the same engine as the M5 nor is an M550 the same as an M5.

I thought the M5 used the S63, not the N63. M cars all have to have M engines. That's sort of a key part of the M line. They took the N63 as a base and altered it to perform to M standards. Which can be small or heavy tweaks to the engine.

But you know more than BMW

It's your machine though. You do you

What Logical said. All M cars have “S” engines. Newer non M BMW’s have N (V8) and B (i6 and 4cyl) engines.

The M550 has the N63TU2/3 and the M5 has the S63. They both have 8 spark plugs, that’s where the comparison ends, relatively speaking.

Remote Start is harder on the engine as you're idling it. The best thing you can do to help the engine in that case is to get it to temperature faster so the oil is providing the proper lubrication to the engine. Which is the exact thing the grills are designed to do...

Instead, you've extended the time it takes to get up to temp... So it idles longer with cooler oil providing inadequate engine lubrication...

New V8 cars get the M-division S68 whether they're M (e.g. XM, M5) or not (e.g. 760i, X7 M60i).

Also, just to add that my gripe with this mod is that the air intakes are covering the radiator. You'd be surprised how much cooling a few cm² of radiator contributes.

What new non-M V8 cars are you referring to that are getting the S68? With regard to the current now out of production M550, no S68. It is my understanding that the only BMW cars getting a V8 going forward are the ///M models as a PHEV. The S68 I think is the powerplant of the X5/7 ///M SUV's, which BMW considers real ///M cars (I don't). I am not arguing with you, just curious.

Been logging everything, temps haven’t moved at all. Also its 40 degrees do I dont think ill see a difference till next spring. N63 is a detuned S63 among a couple of other tiny things.

When you putting on the fake M5 badge? It's the same car, right?

I don’t care about your bimmerlife link☠️☠️ and now you’re putting words in my mouth🤣

The block is the main part of the engine. I trust the guy with the torn down N63/S63 a lot more than the guy with a 5 year old wanna-be LCI M550 crying over another mans car
