2021 540i XDrive Oil Recs

I have a 540I with 38K miles on it bought it a couple months ago ,looking to change the oil myself since it’s out of maintenance warranty, seeing some say the recommendation of oil type in the manual of 0W-20 & 0W-30 is too thin, should I get a higher viscosity oil ? If so what brands/types do you guys recommend that I could go just go and grab from a local store.

What does your manual say the viscosity and oil spec should be? I would follow the factory guidance. My’23 M550i calls for 0W/30 BMW spec LL-01 FE.

With BMWs the viscosity is not as important as the oil approval. For the B58 engine you (likely) have, the primary approval is LL17F+. Alternately you can use LL12FE or LL22FE++. If you want an oil with a higher viscosity, that is fine, but make sure it meets one of these three approvals from BMW. It appears the LL12FE has the highest viscosity, which is 0w-30, so use that if that is your preference for higher viscosity.

BMW approved oils have specific qualities to meet the requirements for their timing chain tests, combustion deposits and a myriad of other properties. You should not just use whatever viscosity you think is appropriate.

Note that I am unsure of the exact version of the B58 engine you have, if you can post that, I can look it up on the "technically suitable engine oils" document from BMW.
Its possible you could use an LL01 or LL04 which would be better still with an even higher HTHS rating (high temperature, high shear). HTHS is more important that viscosity, though the two numbers commonly coincide.

punch your vin into the mdecoder site and it should list what engine you have and check that against the pdf 430scud posted. i have the B58M and chose the castrol edge euro 5w40 which has LL01 approval, but am switching to HPL a boutique oil

if you live someplace where it gets very cold, you should choose a 0W oil vs a 5W
