Torn transmission mounts G30
Anyone have torn transmission mounts yet?
All 3 have torn on my 530e only 30000 miles. Not new to me so perhaps treated badly by the previous owner. I purchased it at 3 years old. Seems this was an ongoing issue on previous generations. Maybe explains my unstable rear end but no noises or knocks. I do sometime feel like the power transmission is a little on/off but had put it down to the hybrid system. |

What made you think to check this? Seems like an odd thing to happen relatively early in the vehicles life.

Rear of the car has felt slightly unstable since I bought it in December. I'm really sensitive to my cars ride and have often felt something's was off on previous cars and eventually found the issue so I went searching.
Had bad alloys/tyres and replaced them which stopped my high speed shaking but at low speed it's like the car is slightly shaking side to side (dog wagging tail) on uneven surfaces in town, it goes away at speed although it's always there in the background. It ruins the car for me I'm used to tight handling and ride on my BMWs. Reduced tyre pressure helped a bit but(I'm on 20s) I always felt something was off physically and seems it's made more noticeable/amplified by VDC which's is super soft in my opinion in all modes. I had stared videoing under the car and noticed the subframe and diff seemed to move a lot but everything else looked good.(Will post video later from a few days ago) have a look at my other threads regards shaking there are tons of videos of under side of car suspension areas) BMW has checked at my cost a few times and found all suspension members and bushings fine. Also had alignment done by them and new brakes and discs fitted. It's really hard to inspect the transmission mounts apart from the rear of the rear mount which looks ok. Even on a lift I'd say this is difficult. Had a Borescope handy and decided to check diff mounts from inside angle as it's impossible to see the rear subframe mounts and this is what I found. I think the subframe mounts could also be bad you will see when I post the video. Car is pristine no crash damage or resprays anywhere, it was inspected by BMW to confirm that so seems this is either last owner thrashing the car or a bad design. (Only damage was a badly buckled rear left wheel maybe a massive pot hole did all this damage but seems excessive.) I feel bad design as the mount system for the engine is vacuum controlled but when the car is in electric mode they don't get hard until the engine starts so a lot of drive train and engine movement occurs in electric mode. No idea why they didn't just use the standard 520i mounts it's the same engine after all, I hear something to do with wanting it soft for a seamless stop start experience in hybrid but may have backfired on them(and me) I read it's a common issue on the last 5 series model as they age so maybe we have the same design flaw here bad quality bushings but failing earlier on 530e due to the excessive drive rain movements in electric mode. Have checks and powerflex don't do g30 sub frame and tranny mounts yet which is a pity. Waiting on a painful quote from BMW as I may as well also do rear subframe mounts if it's coming out. Want to keep the car for 5 years so worth it but won't be cheap I suspect. |

Video of mount and subframe moving, see at 8 minutes for most pronounced movements.
Normal? Looks to me like the Sub Frame is moving a lot also. Im guesisng bad sub frame mounts would lead to chassis shake side to side (tail wag sensation) on uneven roads at slow speeds but settle down at higher speed due to aerodynamic forces keeping the chassis in place. |

Ok so as per my original suspicion I feel the engine mounts are at fault alloying the entire car wallow as they move.
Finally figured out how to video them, what do you all think the movement seems excessive especially considering a most of the driving is electric mode and when the engine runs it doesn't seem to get more firm per the vacuum system. Engine is connected to tranny and exhaust and as I stated before any front movement in a G30 transmits to the rear so this could be why the car seems to shake but I can't see any problems with the suspension or shocks etc. The heaviest part of the car is shaking and moving all over the place on anything but a perfect surface. |
