2018 M550 Coolant leak we meet again

So as to no surprise couple months in and the turbo coolant lines started leaking.

People always say you wanna do something right get it done yourself so I’ve decided I’m going to change the lines myself. I have combed through as many diagrams as I can of the cooling system but would like to be sure that the lines in the picture are the return lines. I’ve attached lines Im planning on ordering.

Note: I just want to replace the ones that are leaking not the entire system.

Yes the lines you have are the updated ones ! From the looks of it I think I’ll need to replace both the supply and return together instead of just one. Unless I’m mistaken.

Anybody who’s done the repair themselves? Would like some feedback

You have the original rubber lines here that were replaced by braided steel lines. I am surprised you made it this long with the discontinued rubber lines. Do yourself a favor and do them all, BMW sells the entire kit. Most of us had them done under warranty.

Just had mine done and I bought all the parts. Did not need new brackets. Go ahead and replace all the hoses while you’re in there.

I’m not sure. The dealer did what they wanted too. I haven’t had a coolant issue since.

Yes I’ll be giving it a go. From all the videos and diagrams I’ve seen it looks to be pretty straight forward. I could see the most challenging part would be removing everything for access to the lines

Isn't that usually the most challenging part of any vehicle work?

Good luck and keep us posted. I am alway curious how hard or easy something is, even though my wrenching days are over.

Just had mine done by a friend who use to be a BMW tech for many years. Went corp America but still does work for friends. There was one line that was tricky for him. He had to take the turbos out too just fyi. Also make sure you get the bolts that hold the lines together. I had to go back and get those after the fact. I think it was pretty straight forward for him other than the one coolant line that he could t get to fit just right. He did a few extra lines while he was in there too.

So I started taking things last few days here and there and noticed that the brackets on the alternator don’t have any threads for the bolts. I’m assuming that’s why the new brackets were part of the kit. I might try to just find the nut size and run them down and safety cable them somewhere or try to add an insert. I can’t justify the cost of those brackets lol.

Well, coolant leak, we meet again too...

In 2023, I had the coolant expansion tank leak (covered by original warranty). In 2024, I had a cylinder coolant hose leak (paid $1100 out of pocket since Route 66 EW doesn't cover hoses). Now in 2025, I smelled coolant again so took it to my dealer today and just heard back that the coolant water pump is leaking. My Route 66 EW should cover this one I expect.

The passenger door lock actuator also seized in a timely manner yesterday so that was diagnosed and hopefully will be covered by the EW as well.

The water pump should definitely be covered, coolant replacement won’t but that’s small change. Definitely interested on the door lock actuator, can’t see how that wouldn’t be.

What is your mileage at? Water pumps usually last 100k miles in BMW’s.

I expect so too. 60K miles on the odo. Kinda surprised the water pump went out so quickly. Might change the thermostat as well while they are in there.

Good to know it's not particularly early. This is my first water pump failure. My F30 went 135K miles (when I sold it) without a water pump failure. Our X3 only has 23K miles so hasn't gotten to that point yet.

Route 66 just called and said they're going to cover both issues (parts + labor), but they don't cover diagnostic fees, shop fees, tax, miscellaneous supplies, etc. They also said they cover parts at aftermarket prices.. not that the part has to be aftermarket but if the dealer charges an inflated parts price, I would have to cover the remaining. We'll see what the final bill comes to..

The thermostat has an extended BMW warranty, similar to the active grills.

Keep me posted. As you know, I’ve barely used mine. The only cloak I have was a TPMS sensor. They wouldn’t pay for a B&W speaker.

I kind of get them having limits to safeguard against overcharging.
