540i Touring

Evening,

I have just agreed preliminarily to buying a 2020 540i Touring from a BMW main dealer. 39k miles, perfect condition. One owner who’s bought his previous car and new car from the same dealer. Always serviced at BMW.

With that in mind, the dealer has offered extended warranty on the car at the following amounts:

12 Months - £832
24 Months - £1448
36 Months - £2064

Would anyone be able to advise if this is something worth accepting at this price? I’m mindful there’s a bit of money off. I believe this is for the comprehensive insurance, all things covered. I also believe the car comes with 12 months approved used warranty regardless.

On that note, is there anything I need to look out for when I go to see the car this week?

Thank you in advance

I wouldn't bother. The 540 is a very reliable car, and there was cross development done with Toyota for the B58. 39k miles is nothing.

If you have a 12-month warranty, that should offer more than enough piece of mind here. EWs are typically a waste of cash, unless you are buying something that you know might bankrupt you.

All BMW's are susceptible to a zinger of a failure in terms of cost. It's not all about the engine, but the B58 suffers the same expensive failures that the entire platform shares in terms of engines. Coolant, turbos, etc.

The rest of potential failures have nothing to do with the engine. Seat mat sensor, flex disk, tranny, etc.

Not saying these cars are ticking time bombs by any means, but I can certainly understand why people want to buy piece of mind at the right price point. I don't know how it works in the UK, but generally the dealer prices for EW's are marked up significantly. You don't need to buy it through them in the US and you don't need to buy them before the factory expires. In other words, you can buy them anytime you want. I would recommend you pass while you are under the 12 month factory warranty and then shop and research at that point.

As with any insurance, sometimes you win, sometime you lose, but in aggregate, the insurer always wins. The key is to not think about it that way in terms of "winning". Most of us buy one that makes sense financially and hope we never have to use it but we sleep better at night having it.

I’ve been running my G31 without a warranty since it’s BMW AUC warranty expired & they wouldn’t renew it due to the exhaust & tune, which funnily enough wasn’t an issue with the AUC warranty. Anyways it’s been fine, not to say that it won’t go expensively wrong at anytime but if it does I’m already approximately £2,000 up with not paying for two years warranty that I wouldn’t have used.

You have a years warranty, I wouldn’t worry about extending it until nearer the time it’s due to expire.

G31 40i’s a great car, good choice….enjoy

So how did the viewing go then ??

I agree with the above posts, take the AUC warranty then decide before it expires. The prices you quote are high and you may be able to get a better deal?

Saying that when I bought my 540 July'23 from Halliwell Jones BMW I took an extended dealer warranty which was not a BMW one but covered everything inc breakdown, 2 years was £900 so thought that was worth it at the time.

Only time I've raised an issue under warranty on the car was under the AUC warranty as I wasn't happy with the way the tailgate closed, wasn't soft close kind of slammed shut. I asked they recode it, didn't make any difference. They said they would put new actuators in, but that involved stripping the roof lining out completely and numerour other fixings and associated trim. I decided that the aggro wasn't worth it, possible damaged trim, future rattles etc., and there was no guarantee it would work. It can be recoded in Bimmercode so i'll likely get someone to do that at some point.

Apart from that no warranty issues at all in just over 20K miles.

The B58 in my F31 sold it with 72k miles bought with 8k and no mechanical warranty issues with that at all. I had 2 wheels replaced at 3 years old due to corrosion though.

Hi Bud,

Don’t know if you are interested but I have sold my 540i now and have an Active Autowerke B58 Downpipe for sale. This does not throw up the CEL and requires no tuning

Thanks
Paul
