Headlight upgrade
Good evening all
For the second time I would like to use you superior knowledge. I would like to improve the light intensity as the current lights are really poor, my old Porsche has a much brighter lights with 35W HID bulbs. My car (2018 G30) is fitted with the standard LED headlights. I have studied costs and advantages of the adaptive lights and understand the benefits, but the price ( including the 5AC) is prohibitive, so my questions are: 1. Will using more powerful bulbs give better night vision and if so, what wattage should I fit? 2. Will the adaptive headlights improve night vision and are worth it without having the 5AC kit? Thank you |

Thank you. Popped into the garage today and they said that there will be no improvement other than the lights will turn left/right. I am after, how to say it, stronger, brighter light in front of me. Currently it is a bit better than Halogens. My Porsche used to have HID which was good, I have changed the bulbs to LED and the results are amazing. The garage said that I am spoiled for good. So, can you please explain in what way it will gat better during darkness? I can get brand new originals + modules for £920 each, but tomorrow is last day of the sale. Thank you |

The icons maintain full main beam and avoid dazzle by moving away from oncoming vehicles or the vehicle in front. This is the movement described above. Only when there are Street lamps or your speed drops below 35mph will the beams revert to the standard dipped beam
The range on full beam with no vehicles in front is significantly greater too. I have this system and drive on uk country roads, it is a marvel to behold and was the only essential upgrade i paid for. The only thing i fear is failure as each unit is several thousand pounds before fitting. Still we are on 53,000 without bother. |

I also live in the UK and have the fun of dark B roads. Thanks for the link, very impressive. So just to conclude. All will work as required other than the High Beam that I will still have to control manually. Am I correct? Thanks again |

The way it works is that you will need a new indicator switch which has an extra button on the end.
With auto headlights on, press the stalk button. A green light appears on the dash. After that you do nothing and watch the light show. The beams illuminate, move or dip according to the camera input. The main beam light will also illuminate unless lamps are dipped. The only annoying thing is that the speed at which the main beam turns off is set too high at about 37mph. This means it's best to put main beam on at low speeds on winding roads when no cars approach and you are going less than 37 for safety reasons. I hope this answers your questions but ask away if you have others. |

I guess that I didn't explain myself correctly, so will try again.
I plan to replace the headlights only, no camera will be fitted at this stage. Will the lights still work as they should (I understand that the auto deeming will not function). I popped into BMW today and they refused even to talk about upgrading, and that means anything, any upgrade. They say that when there is a software upgrade it can cause all sorts of issues. Thanks again Last edited by AC-DC; 02-07-2026 at 05:09 PM.. |

If you buy a set of ICON headlights, they will work straight out of the box provided the plugs are the same (unsure but I doubt it) and that you can live with some errors in the instrument cluster. The lights will be brighter since the LED modules in the ICONs are far superior to the LEDs on your standard headlights. As long as you provide them with power, your new lights will work and you will be very impressed with their output.
The errors and the extra features like FLA (auto high beam) and cornering illumination would need to be coded but you can definitely make them work without that.
