Mrs Chappers, Katherine my wife of 5 years 5 months & my partner since 1999 died at home on Wednesday after a long struggle with alcohol, namely red wine. Her drinking started to get out of control during her Dads fight with cancer & got worse after his death in 2017.
I think we were starting to get on top of it, but her mums horrific & tragic death in January 2020 just tipped her over the edge. She blamed herself for putting her mum on a train for the short 10 minute journey home after they had spent the day together shopping & ironically making her mums funeral arrangements, obviously they both felt the need to stop off at the pub by the train station for a bottle of wine or two, as I suppose most would to round of a day together.
When her mum got of the train at around 6pm she walked the wrong way along the platform, it was a dark, wet & stormy evening & she was clipped by a passing train as she had inadvertently walked down the slope at the end of the platform & onto a maintenance path that ran alongside the tracks. She lay undiscovered on the railway tracks until 2pm the next day. I suspect that had she not been drinking it wouldn’t have happened.
Katherine never forgave herself for not driving her home that evening & drank to blot out her guilt. I tried to get her grief counselling but no professionals would help due to her drinking.

So I kissed her goodbye & told her that I loved her Wednesday morning, she was siting up in bed when I left her at 6.30am & when I returned home at 5.30pm I found that she had died in bed, she looked peaceful, Frank & Bella were both in the bedroom with her, the paramedic suspected that she died sometime early afternoon.
She is the love of my life, despite the fact that she was a cunt when she’d been drinking but I never stopped loving her, we had many happy years before she became unwell & my life is going to be so empty now without her.

I am counting on my Colonial Cousins to continue to cheer me up with your usual amusing posts, thanks for reading.

Roy

I got a couple of recruiters that called me in regards to job openings. So far, I am talking to a recruiter on behalf of General Motors. They're looking for a District Sales Manager (I guess I fit the criteria the hiring manager is looking for).

The pay is great plus I get time and a half for O.T. 3 days will be at the office location in Naperville IL (50 mile 2 way drive from my house. So, about 4,700 miles in 7 months. That's what I put on the BMW in a year right now ). 2 days at home.

It is a 7-month contract-to-hire position though. That's the part I don't know how I feel about. What if after 7 months I don't get to move forward with a permanent position?

Does anyone have experience with a contract-to-hire position? The recruiter said 95% of the people he's recruited end up with a permanent position with GM.
Get your ass in the door. Be a stellar employee and network like hell internally. You have more options by the end of the 7 months at other roles also. For a new grad, getting your ass in the door is half the battle.

I'm with NVRfollo , get in there and bust your ass. The 5% of the time they don't convert contractors is because they suck. The 7 month contract is a way to test drive you. See what kind of a brain and work ethic you bring to the table.

I've mentored many young professionals over the years and the strongest advice I can give them is - Work hard and good things happen. All this said, finding a Millennial these days that actually works hard is like finding a unicorn. For them, it's more like, hey I showed up for 7 months, when do I get promoted and can I get more PTO.

Thank you mate.

As for the job opportunity, I’d say you gotta give it a go. Be confident, do a good job & don’t even think that they won’t keep you on. And if it doesn’t work out you’ve lost nothing & gained experience, you can’t put a price on that.

Not a bad deal. No B&W or I would have been bidding. It's beyond me how you can put together a build like this and leave that off.

All of my hiring is done that way, except we do 3 months. I had one guy that didn't work out (long story) but my other hires have been good. It gives us a chance to get someone in the door and if they suck, we can get rid of them without worrying about getting sued. And that works both ways - if you don't like it, you can leave and it's OK because it was just contract.

I have copied below the excellent advice to which I say "ditto".

This is so true. Nothing against Millennials per se, but they are a different breed to manage.

Many employers say that they can train anyone - it's finding someone who will show up to work on time and put in the effort, that's the thing that they want, that is so difficult to find these days.

And I can't help but think that when you go permanent, you'll get a brand new Chevy Cruze company car to tool around in. So, no miles on your precious BMW.

I could ask for a car as part of my permanent hire contact

I have to gain confidence though. I went over the job description again and I'm like, "How in the hell am I going to do this"? I had the same reaction when I first got into selling cars. Now I sell about 15-20 cars a month.

I posted the job description and qualifications below. If anyone cares

I'll get my Bachelor's Degree on Oct 21st. I have over 3 years of sales experience. The recruiter told me GM is especially looking for someone that's got experience in the automotive industry. Which I've got.

Hopefully, I get a permanent position here. Tired of this commission b.s. job.

Just wanted to thank you all (Y’all) for the kind posts, means a lot

Been keeping busy & getting on with some of the jobs around the house that never got done these last few years, so plenty to do.
Frank & Bella give me a reason to get up in the mornings & keep me going.

Don’t know what I’m gonna do about work as I won’t leave the dogs alone for more than 5 hours & Frank’s banned from the office as the one time I took him to work the MD walked in a few hours after Frank had meet everyone & was settled under my desk (with his lead on & the handle over my leg) Frank rushed up to within a couple of feet of him (he couldn’t have got any closer as I had him) barking, fur up & teeth out, MD very quickly backed out the door, red faced & very scared, I was told to put him in my truck & not to bring him back

Anyways gonna take next week off & get Mrs Chappers funeral arrangements & finances sorted as the interim Death Certificates arrived today. So plenty to do.
Is strange her not being around but just gotta get on with it…

Once again thank you

Chappers,

Condolences on your loss. Having lost my dad a few weeks ago, I can only begin to understand what you must be feeling. Grief, sadness, relief (for my family) are some the feelings we have to deal with in times like these. Recovery takes time.

I applaud you for the candid expressions of events and thoughts you have shared with this community. You've had to endure a tough situation. It takes courage to open up to others, and we are all glad to be able to listen and give our support.

Sending a virtual embrace across the pond to you. I wish you the best as you deal with your loss.

Roger

Does anyone have experience with a contract-to-hire position? The recruiter said 95% of the people he's recruited end up with a permanent position with GM.
Have you asked GM if they provide you with a vehicle if you're hired fulltime ?
My brother is the New England Sales Manager for Thermofisher. His biggest account is Pfizer.
He gets a new car every 2 years, free gas and a $15k expense account every month for shmoozing clients.

Once again thank you
Solid plan Chap, Frank and Bella will certainly be helping you through the tough times. They sense what is going on and will be there for you. Hope you’ve had some flickers of happiness.

Carlos

My brother is the New England Sales Manager for Thermofisher. His biggest account is Pfizer.
He gets a new car every 2 years, free gas and a $15k expense account every month for shmoozing clients.
I'll ask him during the interview. I'm thinking of asking the GM at my current job if he'll give me a used car manager position here.

I want to see if I'll get the District Sales Manager job first. If I do, I'll talk to the GM at my current job and let him know that I've got a job offer with General Motors as a District sales manager but I'd rather stay with you guys That's only if I can get promoted to a used car manager and they meet or beat the Salary the GM is giving me.

Tired of this commission-based crap.

So I kissed her goodbye & told her that I loved her Wednesday morning, she was siting up in bed when I left her at [...]
I am so sorry Chappers. I always enjoy reading your posts. You are a good man.

Oh I despise "commission".......but that's where "sales" only profits. Wish you all the best!

I like the place I work at. Just don't like the whole commission-based crap. Plus, too many hours are being put in. Sometimes I have to stay longer than I should be because a customer came in 1 hour before I was supposed to leave and now I am stuck with them just to make $200~.

If I don't sell a car, I made $0 that day. The whole day goes to waste.

At least at this new job, I get paid overtime if I stay after my 9-5 shift. If the GM at my current job gives me a used car manager position, I'll gladly take that over the district sales manager position. Only if he beats or meets the salary. If not, I am out.

Though, I might get better connections with the district sales manager position.

Been collecting and selling cigars seriously since 2014 or so. I have about 5000+ sticks give it take overall. Mostly all hard to find, rare, limited, small production run stuff. If anyone appreciates cigar unicorns or enjoys boutique brands and wants to grab some boxes/singles/samplers off me feel free to DM me.

This started off with a single 25 count desktop humidor and quickly spiraled out of control (as do most hobbies/interests). Now I have a 7ft cedar cabinet, 2 - 150qt coolidors, 4 desktops humidors, and countless air tight containers for overflow storage. The craziest part about my whole cigar smoking an collecting experience is that I DONT EVEN SMOKE ANYMORE!

Got Covid real bad in 2020 (OG Covid) and my lungs had some damage as a result (damage has since reversed) but long story short I had stopped smoking for a few months to recover and haven’t picked back up smoking since. Perhaps my loss could be your gain if anyone has certain brands or sticks they are interested we can work something out that we’re both happy with.

I don’t have a lot of the “big box brands” mostly boutique stuff but feel free to reach out and I can send pics of various drawers in my cabinet or go digging in my coolidors for you!

The primary brands that I buy/sell:

fuente, opus x, warped, Tatuaje, roma craft, crowned heads, Davidoff, foundation, Cubans (although not a ton as I’ve always preferred Dominican/Nicaraguan tobacco), black label trading co, black works studios, Powstanie, etc… there’s a lot more but this is off the top of my head.
