If I don't sell a car, I made $0 that day. The whole day goes to waste.

At least at this new job, I get paid overtime if I stay after my 9-5 shift. If the GM at my current job gives me a used car manager position, I'll gladly take that over the district sales manager position. Only if he beats or meets the salary. If not, I am out.

Though, I might get better connections with the district sales manager position.
Okay my quick take - you don’t turn down a district sales manager position at your age, the experience and connection opportunity is too good.

Aside from that - careful what you wish for. I’ve been commission and I’m now salary (with some incentive). I prefer my current comp model. But the quickest way to make more money in life is to either invent something awesome or be in commission sales and sell more shit.

If you’re good at sales and in a good industry/market then you can probably make more money on commission than salary - not talking industry specific, just generally.

In car sales, the commission is a whole different ball game. At least with the group I work for it is. When I first started with this group (Bob Loquercio Auto Group) back in 2019~, we would get 25% of gross profit. So, say I sell a new car and the gross profit is $4,000 after pack (advertisement fee and lot insurance, etc, at Ford, pack was $500 on new and $500 on used cars if I a not mistaken).

That would be $1,000 in my pocket that I made in what, 2 hours? After a month of working with the auto group, they start capping us. Meaning, the most you can make on a new car is $825, and on a used car $825. So, say I sold a new 2022 Ford Bronco for $10k over sticker, all I would make is $825 instead of the full 25% commission. I did get pissed at the time. But, fords were already marked up from the factory about $6k~ (invoice to MSRP). Even if I did sell a new Ford at MSRP, I'd still make about $500~.

Fast Foward to a few months after Ford closed, I am here at Hyundai and this place is not worth working for. The cars are not marked up at all from the factory. So, If I sell a new Hyundai at MSRP, all I make is $100. Last month I sold 20 cars and made $3,000. All the used cars are shit. We don't have an actual used car manager and the GM doesn't care to fix the cars. I mean this place is a mess. I always work past my schedule because someone's dumb self decides to walk in on a Tuesday 10 min before we close and the managers want us to take the up and see if they are buying a car.

Gents,

I've returned from some travel (Amsterdam for a few nights, then 9-night Norwegian fjords cruise). Amsterdam was stupid crowded. Annoyingly so. Anne Frank museum was good. Van Gogh (BTW: it's pronounced van "gouph", like "cough") museum would have been better if it wasn't jammed to the rafters and they have capacity controls in place. If you're headed to Amsterdam, buy your museum tickets ASAP as they sell out the day they are released in many cases. There's a strong scalper market utilizing hotel concierges as middlemen.

If you have the means, do the Norwegian fjords NOW. They were breathtaking and the Norwegian people are top shelf. UNESCO world heritage fjords (Geiranger, Flam iirc) will be closed to fossil fueled ships starting in 2025 so get there now. Geiranger is unbelievable. Highlight of the trip although hiking up to the Birksdal glacier was a close, though strenuous, second.

Now my input to some previous posts...I know you've been waiting for it.

I got a couple of recruiters that called me in regards to job openings. So far, I am talking to a recruiter on behalf of General Motors. They're looking for a District Sales Manager (I guess I fit the criteria the hiring manager is looking for).

The pay is great plus I get time and a half for O.T. 3 days will be at the office location in Naperville IL (50 mile 2 way drive from my house. So, about 4,700 miles in 7 months. That's what I put on the BMW in a year right now ). 2 days at home.

It is a 7-month contract-to-hire position though. That's the part I don't know how I feel about. What if after 7 months I don't get to move forward with a permanent position?

Does anyone have experience with a contract-to-hire position? The recruiter said 95% of the people he's recruited end up with a permanent position with GM.
As others have said, take the job, work your ass off (especially when they hand you a seemingly meaningless assignment -- it's a test to see if you'll do the dirty work well). GM is being smart by hiring slowly, firing quickly.

Use the successes in your first job to get the next, better job.

Agreed. Take it and make it your own. Act like you already have the permanent position. No tip toeing around. Get in there and own it.

Perhaps my loss could be your gain if anyone has certain brands or sticks they are interested we can work something out that we’re both happy with.

I don’t have a lot of the “big box brands” mostly boutique stuff but feel free to reach out and I can send pics of various drawers in my cabinet or go digging in my coolidors for you!

The primary brands that I buy/sell:

fuente, opus x, warped, Tatuaje, roma craft, crowned heads, Davidoff, foundation, Cubans (although not a ton as I’ve always preferred Dominican/Nicaraguan tobacco), black label trading co, black works studios, Powstanie, etc… there’s a lot more but this is off the top of my head.
LOL holy fucking shit.

Not the quickest, but the best way to make money is to have people working for you.

To the other point, yes, you do not turn down this job. Take it (assuming that the salary is acceptable).

In one breath you mention asking for the used car manager spot, and in another post you describe the current store as a nightmare of incompetence. Why then would you want to stay?

And yes, that job description looks intense, but they are not going to hire you - especially as an entry level position - and not train you, give you assistance, guidance, etc. from your boss and peers. You won't be dumped out there with no help (unlike your current sales position, most likely).

You can always get a job selling cars. A position like this with a Fortune 100 company doesn't come along very often.

Go for it. You can thank us later.

The current store is a nightmare if you're a salesman. If you're a manager, it's heaven. The used car department is a nightmare. But, I think I can make it a better-used car department.

But you're right, with the district manager position, I can get any kind of management position at a dealership IF I don't like the position at GM or don't get to move forward after 7 months.

I am also getting paid by the hour and I get paid for overtime. At the dealership, if I work overtime, I don't get paid scrap unless I sell a car. I think I'll be putting an hour or 2 of overtime at the new job (if I get it) just so I don't get stuck in traffic on my way home. Plus, I can learn a lot quicker if I put in a couple of extra hours in the first week.

In fairness, have you seen people drive the last 3 years? Traffic laws are fiction.

Somewhat out of date now ;-)

This little thing was truly mind blowing at Goodwood.
Nobody had seen anything like it.
2 tons of downforce from standstill - and 1.4 seconds later you are at 60..
Road / track day, though not for me.
Somewhere there is a video of it with traction control off - so funny.

https://mcmurtry.com/0-60mph-and-%C2...try-speirling/

I am somewhere in the crowd watching this, truly remarkable car.
It's been a real privilege to see / witness every Goodwood hill record set, and I do think they are going to have to now separate ICE / electric cars, as no ice car is ever going to compete with what an electric can do.
The VW ID hill climb car was truly exceptional, having won Pikes Peak, then along comes this diminutive thing and destroys it's record.

A friend works at Silverstone, and sees this a lot, and from the begining to now, they have had a mountain to climb. I think the view from the top is stunning for them.
Not exactly my idea of a road car, and hardly luxurious, imagine trying to drag this from a set of lights.
The look / expression from the guys on the start line are hilarious.
The goodwood record was set with the car being limited to 150mph.
So it did, basically, 150mph all the way up, even the notorious 'Molecomb' corner, which has been the demise of so many cars being pushed.

Going to take myself off to a classic car meet at Headcorn aerodrome in Kent tomorrow, is about a 40 minute drive away, used to be a WW2 airfield.
I can take the b road route most of the way & it’s gonna be sunny tomorrow, so roof open, stereo off, sports +, little bit of paddle shifting, should be a nice little drive
They also fly spitfires out of Headcorn so with a bit of luck I’ll get to see a couple up close & watch them take off.

Will walk the puppies first thing then leave them watching cartoons, Mighty Mike is Franks favourite. I won’t leave them for more than five hours though

I just noticed this guy has 17.3 million subscribers on YT! Marcus Brownlee. Never heard of him, but I don't get out much.

Nobody had seen anything like it.
2 tons of downforce from standstill - and 1.4 seconds later you are at 60..
Road / track day, though not for me.
Somewhere there is a video of it with traction control off - so funny.

I'm aware of the McMurty. But this is a production vehicle.
Very different from a purposely built race car.
I dont think anyone can argue that going from 0 to 100mph in 3 seconds is ridiculously quick.
