This sounds like a good idea to me but use your experience and help her shop for the car.

Edit: that way she gets her choice and you get to make sure it's a good choice.

Gotcha!

I offered this and Euro delivery and she said she didn't want to go through the hassle as she has to take 2 Bar exams next year and move to another city.

Thanks so much and I'm sorry for my misunderstanding.

Indeed. This is kinda her 4th car but will be the first that wasn't a hand me down.

She had my Ford Fusion company car in HS, My 328d company car in college, and now her aunt's 328i in Law School. I want new and something special for her.

Thanks for the great points!!

There’s no such thing as euro delivery anymore, for a few years now
Unless you go Porsche like murph suggested.

Another point about you helping her get a car is to make sure she doesn’t spend the 50 in hookers and blow…

No need to overthink this - a new, black 330i is in the budget and she gets what she wants. I'm sure an intelligent young woman such as herself can be talked out of PITA diesels without warranties

Do diesels not have warranties?

Sounds like a sarcastic question. If so, it is a smart ass way to ask about whether buying a used diesel and then paying for mechanical insurance since the car will be out of warranty, or buying a brand new gasoline car with warranty as the most reliable choice.

Look into CPO...sounds like you are unfamiliar and the many warranty options available.

What city in the southwest? If it is one of the desert areas, I could see a black car or convertible being undesirable in the insane heat.....

A black Diesel in the Southwest sounds like a recipe for disaster. Dieselheads are a special dedicated bunch of tech-savvy people and the whole AdBlue thing is quite the debacle in the USA, which is why the automakers have abandoned Diesel models. So a Diesel will be relatively old and come with reliability and maintainability issues. The black part: What Vreihen16 and Carravagio said.

I understand she no doubt remembers that 328d with affection but that was back before the Diesel sh!t hit the fan.

I'm in my 70s now and quite a bit more sensitive to heat in my cars than I was when tooling around the desert West in a car without air conditioning while still in my early 20s. It's quite possible that a young woman with a dark-colored car in the Southwest won't be particularly bothered by dealing with ambient and in-car heat.

From another perspective, I learned living with black cars on the West Coast that they required constant cosmetic maintenance to look good. It was like an on-off switch - because they showed everything, either they looked their best or they looked dirty. Having tired of the constant cleaning, I switched to white vehicles when possible, and the difference was remarkable.

This thread is interesting -- we are all trying to discourage your daughter's desire to have a black Diesel. Virtually all negative. With good reason, though, I might add.

On the convertible question: A CPO or recent-vintage BMW 4 series convertible is going to be a retractable hardtop model. I think those are cool, but I wonder about the medium-term reliability of that top mechanism.

I was thinking a CPO 4 series convertible. She will only be young once and is a really good kid. She saved my life and I have to make her leave me to go to class and study.

Thanks for the suggestions!!
MK. I rarely post to these types of threads, but you probably have seen me post to something cmyx6go posts because she and I tend to think alike for some weird reason. Anyway, as a lawyer who often provides advice and guidance to young lawyers, I would advise against a convertible. She is going to be starting a career in a demanding field and she wants/needs something low-maintenance, stylish, and safe. For me, a new 330i with m sport is the perfect choice (get black sapphire as it's much more resistant to swirls, marks, etc.). I favor this choice so much that a young lady I used to supervise took my advice and got a mineral gray one as her first new car post-graduation and after getting used to the car she proclaimed my advice as perfect.

BTW….glad to see you are on the rebound from the health incident.
