Alright so I went to the shop and we confirmed G4 went in the rear and G2 went in the front so those weren’t the issues.

More importantly, we replaced the sensor and so far the errors haven’t returned.

Usually it came right back on but nothing so far. As of right now, it looks like the sensor was the full issue for me.

Will be sure to update the thread if the issue comes back but if not, hope this helps anyone with this issue in the future!

Hopefully that works!

I’m running G2 in the front and G3 in the rear on my 2019. Have had them in there for about 12k miles and over a year - no issues.

Is G4 a new spec?

I dropped in the oil spec sheet I found in the first page if you want to reference that. It’s the proper rear diff oil for cars with an SA2T4 which I believe is the m sport differential.

I did call bmw this morning to confirm the rear diff for my m550 should have G4. I’m not sure how much of a difference it makes but given all rear diff issues I wanted to rule out every possibility.

Got it. Pretty sure my car does not have that diff based on my limited research.

Seems like M50i, M60i, and cars with DAPP have it?

Edit - forgot what forum I was on, thought this thread was in the G05 forum haha. Those are the fluids I have in my G05. Can’t remember what I put in my RWD G30.

Well the “Oil Tempurate Sensor Signal Out Of Range” came back.

RIP my wallet because there go all the “cheap” fixes. Will be taking it to the shop probably Friday to have it looked over. It’s a signal failure so I’ll have the shop look but maybe wiring?

I’m just guessing at this point so we’ll see

That sucks. I know the feeling of thinking you got something fixed and boom....

So, did this fault start right after the shopped changed your fluids?

Yep, 5 days after, looks like.

I wonder if they pinched a wire somewhere. It has to be related, there's no question.
EDIT: I'm wrong

It actually did not. It occurred prior to changing the fluids. I was going to get the differential fluid changed anyway so I then went and did that once the code fired.

Following the change it was happening at the same rate which made me move forward with the sensor change. Now it’s still occurring at the same rate so I’m going to drop the car off Friday and have them take a look starting with the wiring.

Nothing about it feels or sounds like mechanical failure. No sound, pulling, or anything that would indicate actual problems. I did have my rear differential go on a mustang and that had a subtle whirring to it whenever I was driving but this shows no sign of wear. The actual oil when they changed it came out looking cleaner than I’d expect as well.

The harness for this sensor is pretty much just hanging behind the diff and I was driving it hard any chance I got once I bought it - wonder if I jostled a wire loose or something.

So I haven’t had the sensor issue come back in a couple days.

Pushed the car hard last night with a 2k break boost launch last night. Dragy results added but it was a slight left turn so not the best run, just wanted to test. But got home and no sensor issues.

Tested this morning and no sensor issues and kicked out the back a few times just to see if I could recreate it and no sensor errors again today.

Will continue to monitor and if it shows up I’ll be taking it to the shop and will be sure to update everyone on what I do.

Shop decided to replace the wiring harness and hasn’t seen the codes since. Picking up today and hopefully we solved the issue. Cost attached here.

Issue came back starting with the oil sensor out of range followed by the same two rear diff errors. This time it occurred after driving about 10 minutes in comfort mode then being parked.

Love the electrical problems!!

Will be taking it back to the shop and will update the thread when I get it back.

No way. Even after replacing the whole harness? This is crazy bananas.

It’s wild - seems to happen when I’m idling for a good amount of time.

Pinched wire lead to the issues and according to the shop that has been doing the work this entire time, this will be a permanent fix. To be determined of course but the rear diff fluid was changed on two occasions (only paid the first time and the second was during their diagnosis which they didn’t charge me for) and mechanically everything looked in good working condition with no metal in the fluid.

Price I paid for this job is attached here. To be clear, this is for replacing the pinched areas of the wiring and not for an entirely new harness. It was explained to me that the new harness would be 3x the cost.

Of course if this comes back I will again update the thread but fingers crossed it doesn’t come to that.
