What I don't understand is why in some DIY they change the small chip and in others the big one ... other users change the 2 ...What is the good option to do it?

My question is? Why would you try to copy this guy work and not experiment yourself... He probably spent hours figuring this out and sourcing parts so it would work every time.
Easy to copycat others work after it is done with research and development. The reason why he can only charge $150 for the work and parts. I find it incredibly cheap for the actual cost of having BMW order a new FOB for you and you will never get that one from them. I am not trying to make a case here just my opinion. |

Not sure if folks are aware, there has been interest in doing this since late 2016 and up until Gates Innovations entered the picture, there has not been a cost effective solution. Some members paid up to $400 and sent their keys overseas to get this done. Not exactly a great deal or quick and easy.
https://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1331334 If someone has all the specialized tools and know how, then good for them, it seems to be a DIY. But for the rest of us, $150 is a steal for a huge time and tool investment for a very appealing upgrade to what I would consider, a poor design by BMW. I honestly can't believe the Roll Royces used the same key design. It's so chunky and unappealing to the eyes. |

On the flip side $150 is a small price to pay if you have no soldering skills and don't care to learn. |

I'm just worried about the longevity and reliability of these possibly replica fobs. Last thing I want to be is stranded in the middle of no where if my key don't work.

I worry about getting run over by a truck everytime I go outside but what you gonna do? Honestly if you have a problem, George is a reputable seller. I had an issue with my locksmith screwing up the blade and then dropping the blade and leaving a ding. I reached out to George and he took care of me. Trust me that this is better than shipping it to China like some of the early guys did to get this done. It was also $400! So for $150 this is a steal.

I believe any locksmith that has a machine that can read the VIN/code off the key should be able to cut it accurately. Just don't have them try to use a machine that just traces the key pattern.

Oddly I did exactly what the comment said above "google BMW locksmith." After a few issues on which side of the OEM key to use for a template, was done in a matter of minutes. All works as it should!

Guy told me the left although normally the right (think that was the confusion). He was a mobile locksmith and did it right in the van in my driveway! $65. Although only key hole is the driver's door.

I wonder why the guy did it on the right side as oppsed to the left. I guess it doesn’t really matter as long as it opens the door |

Here is a question though. If the car is locked (battery is fine on the car) and you open the car only with the blade, the alarm goes off (both with the retrofit and OEM key); how do you drive the car without the dongle, or is that just not happening and the blade is only when the car battery is dead?

Well I got my key in the mail today. Looks perfect, works perfect Very Very Satisfied
George from Gates was a real pleasure to deal with, fast responses to questions and I'm overall very satisfied with everything. This is what our cars should of really came with, and I'm happy George now made that happen. When I looked inside the old key, I can tell it was de-soldered precisely and no overburn marks in sight. Cheers! |
