A helmet is a no-brainer when riding any type of cycle, scooter, etc.—whether it's a rule or not.

I'm surprised we don't have to wear helmets in cars with everyday driving, but I guess we are not as exposed as on a cycle or scooter—so maybe that's a part of the reason.

You should have seen the looks that I received whenever I drove my car on the streets wearing my racing helmet!

Keep in mind that the Snell foundation certifies helmets to different standards based on their intended use. For example, a motorcycle "Snell M" has road rash of the outer shell as a major test, whereas auto racing "Snell SA" are tested for fire resistance in a closed/burning vehicle.....

I think Snell also is rated for multi-impacts with a rollbar, moreso than the M-rated ones - so counter-intuitively, they are way better to wear to that biker brawl where you might get hit with a bat.

And if you have a rollbar you really should have a helmet on, because you fly about in some accidents more than the seat can contain.

I had somebody tell me that new police cruisers have some kind of subsonic sound generators (off exhaust?) that they use in chase/stop situations in order to alert or get the attention of the driver. Sort of tin-foil-hat'ish but coincidentally I'd also had a couple of times in traffic around cruisers that had really noticeable and rorty exhaust. Is this for real that they have some subsonic device (not the crowd-control LRAD)?

Not that I’m aware of, but we just started rolling out our 2025 units. Some other departments already have newer patrol units.

Some good news from that TV police show last night. Knox County, TN Deputy Dalton Swanger is finally out of the hospital and recovering at home, after spending a week in ICU in a coma. About a month ago, he responded to a reported domestic incident after dark, and was investigating screaming/shouting in the woods behind the house on live TV. The male half of the domestic threw a large rock or brick, hitting him in the head and knocking him unconscious. The TV show would normally cut away from a location like this for sensitivity reasons, but the producers and on-scene camera crew had no idea what had happened in the woods until two other deputies dragged him out of the tree line by handles on his vest.

The accidental airing of this sensitive incident spawned a debate on the TV show. Deputy Swanger's girlfriend was watching live, and she sent an email to the producers thanking them for airing the incident because she had a chance to talk with him in the ambulance by cell phone during a moment of consciousness. The deputy sent an email as well once he was home, also supporting the show for airing the risks that officers and their families accept as a daily of their job. He also said that he plans to return to work as soon as he has finished his recovery.....
