Yeah, interesting comment. Low end torque is pretty much how V8's distinguish themselves. If the M550 had any more LET, I think my neck would snap.

There’s so much torque, I swear if a few of us got together, we could get the world to rotate round the other way!

I guess this is what would differentiate a tuned up 540 versus a stick 550

But back to 530/540 as there are already a few 540/550 threads here!

The B58 is a great, powerful engine and can achieve really high output levels tuned. The problem with these smaller engines is that they really need the turbos to kick in at 3500 RPM to get going, tuned or not. Where the V8's just pull like a mother from zero and then the turbo's kick in and you're on a completely different level of physics.

Where is it coming from and is it coming straight to you or through a local dealer.

I bought many cars site unseen and out of state. When that truck comes, it's like Christmas morning!

Got it from BMW San Francisco. They said they’re sending it to BMW Sherman Oaks for like a final inspection and all that stuff, then once that’s done they’re gonna send it straight to my front door. I can’t wait, it’s gonna be an early Christmas for me!

I have the 540i RWD with M Sport and don’t notice a tendency to slide unless the pavement is slippery. In 6 years I don’t think I’ve ever turned off the DSC though. Maybe I should live a little and try it sometime.

You’ve already made your decision to get the 540i, which is the right way to go even though some will try to convince you otherwise. We also have 2 X3 xdrive30i’s and while the B46/B48 is a good engine, the 4300lb X3 is just too heavy for it to ever be sporty. A G30 530i would be closer to 3900 lbs but that’s still too much weight for the 4 banger to haul around in a sporting style. It will be sluggish compared to the wonderful B58 and that alone would negate and weight benefit of the smaller engine. So yeah, same thing most everyone else has recommended, just another to confirm your decision.

Congrats on your purchase. I just recently (3months ago) got a 2019 540i rwd m sport metallic black. If you turn off traction control and mash it into a turn it will definitely get sideways but be careful… these cars look big outside but they don’t act like big cars when you are driving them. Mine is still completely stock on good tires 85% tread left and it slides easy. Enjoy your car. It’s the best car I’ve ever owned thus far.

Any tips on negotiating? If I’m thinking of the right listing, that’s some serious $$$s knocked off

Yesterday I got out of a X3 30i loaner that I’d had for a week and back in my M550. The difference is unreal. I immediately fell in love all over again with my M550.

I'm still waiting to get my M550i from repairs from several weeks ago. Been driving my wife's X3 30i all this while and can't wait to get back into my M550i!

Feels like getting in a race car, in comparison.

I think this phenomenon contributes to the novelty not wearing off of mine after 4 years. Daily driving this hard working V6 125k mile QX60 boat that is even more underpowered now after 10 years of wear and tear and getting into the M550 from Friday to Sunday is such a dramatic change. Then there are 4 months of winter when I don't drive it and getting into on that first nice Spring day makes me fall in love with it all over again.

Yeah, that’s why I prefer my 540i over her X3. Not as much power as the M550i but definitely better than winding out the B46 in a 4300lb small SUV. BTW, I’ve always referred to it as the B48 but recently read it’s actually the B46 in the US, still ~255BHP. We have ‘18 and ‘22 (LCI) and the LCI seems to have better transmission programming, but still has to work hard.

Yeah, it’s a great little SUV. Gets the job done and can be fun to tool around in. But you can hear and feel it winding up hard when you need it to pull at all.

I don't know how you can not drive your M550i voluntarily for 4 months. I don't think I'd be able to do that.

The winters here do damage. Snow, salt, sand, potholes that can knock your teeth out, etc. just beat the shit out of a car. Then there are the wheels. 668's bend pretty easy and take a beating on the aforementioned winter roads. I am also running Summer rubber and I'd rather not change to winter wheels and tires like I used to in my other BMW's, especially the RWD ones. It's a PIA and wheels take up a lot of room in the garage.

Not gonna lie, with this whole Global Warming thing, I'll take it for a quick spin on a nice 50 degree January day. But the thought of exposing it to winter and the wear and tear it puts on it outweighs the temptation to drive it in the winter. I know it's no Porsche or Ferrari, but the car is pretty much perfect like it came off the factory line, so it's kind of an obsession to keep it that way.

Hmm makes sense. Winters in WI were like that back when I lived there, except the roads were not that horrible (although they were pretty bad in the winters and poorly patched up in the summers). Despite that though, if I had 18" wheels I'd probably still use the car but your standards of care are far higher than mine.

I never used to be this way. I drove off the lot in several brand new 7-series into deep snow and salt with my dog in the back scratching up the wood and my kids eating McDonald's. Hahaha. There is just something about this car. I am also in a different financial situation where the $90,000 car is not my only car. Finally, I spend a lot of time looking at cars on Bring a Trailer and I do daydream about keeping a car for 25 years or so or until it is deemed a "classic" and having something collectible.

Would you buy a car that had been in WI for a little while?
