Weight distribution does have a huge effect but it can be somewhat masked by tuning. If we're talking about just driving enjoyment, the masking can do a very good job but if we're talking about actual performance as in split times then you can't break the laws of physics. If just driving for fun honestly no one cares whether your cornering speeds are like a couple miles per hour slower or faster. you're not going to notice. But you WILL notice understeer/oversteer so you can just throw tire are the problem to resolve the balance even if it a particular platform has a lower overall threshold. Case in point is the 911, no one in their right mind would hang the engine out over the ass like that but careful tuning makes it feel awesome for the most part. Porsche know there's a limit to this which is also why you never see the cayman/boxster get all the goodies the 911 gets. The two chassis are so fundamentally similar they share a LOT of parts and even more compatability wise (even the parts that are different are often interchangeable). If you give the boxster/cayman not just the GT3 engine but also the double wishbone front suspension as well as all the shock absorber goodies and aero it would destroy the GT3RS but you can't do that because product heirarchy |
