Problem with USB map update
hi,
if anyone can help please i would appreciate. I have a G30 520DMsport registered nov2017. Current map is map3/2017, trying to update via usb to latest update and when i put usb into either of the ports in the car nothing is happening at all. Does the update have to be put into a particular folder on the usb? I downloaded onto a clean usb from the connected drive store and it says just put usb into port in car but nothing happening. i would appreciate any help that could be given, Martin.. Just out of interest, what is the size of file you end up with in the drive? Do you use BMW download manager for the file? |

Yes I used the BMW download service and the files in total were just under 32gb.
Did you update via usb? Did you have to do anything with the files or did you just plug in the usb? Can I ask what format your usb is? Fat32, exfat ? |

Should the files even be in a folder on your USB?
Without knowing the exact steps you took from download to upload...its all a mystery to us. We don't know if you have an FSC code, or if you even powered the car (you didn't mention either). Take the time to give a step by step of the process you did...that's the only way (without throwing question after question at you) as to where you may need to make a correction. There are also videos all over YouTube on how the steps you need to take once you've downloaded the files to your computer...to formatting the USB drive, to copying the files to the USB drive. Help us help you better...the more details you give, the closer you'll probably be to having your new maps. Here's an example of how to upload maps to a USB drive...then upload the maps to your BMW:

Sorry for lack of detail, steps I took are as follows, Logged into connected drive on laptop, Went to map update, Downloaded the files, Had formatted blank 64gb usb in fat32 format, Transferred all files to usb (approx 32gb), Ejected usb and put usb into both USB ports in car and tried both in the engine on and engine off mode. I am on a paid map update service until nov 2020 and the was a file on the usb called fsc code. Have looked at the video you kindly exhibited however I noticed this was for an f10 whereas my car is a g30. (The process may be the same). If you have any advice I would be grateful. Martin. |

What happens when you plug in the usb drive in the car?
Does anything happen at all? Odd as I've never had an issue with this before. Is it worth doing a directory listing on the usb drive so we can see what's on there? I'm assuming it's expanded the files and you haven't just got a compressed file there , I think the installer should do this all for you. |

Also do you have a usb slot in the centre armrest in addition to the one near the cup holders?
Casual glance at your screen print and that looks reasonable to me but as I say I will compare to mine later to day. |

Did you by any chance use a Mac to download the files? If so, the uSB is going to have hidden mac files that need to be deleted before you can use it for map upgrade. You can use a program like Blue Harvest to to that. If you were using a PC, this does not apply, but it is probably worth the effort to try a different USB drive.

Hi,
Have you been through the idrive settings while the usb is plugged in? I did mine a while ago and I am sure I had to do something in the idrive to tell it to install the update. Sorry I can't remember exactly what I did. I may be wrong but its worth a look.... I used the usb by the cup holders. Good luck |

OP car is a 2017. May need a iStep level update. Lots of iDrive bugs in early firmware releases.

Hi claykin, I have a2017 and it's coming up for first service. I asked service about software updates and was told none. How do I persuade them that there are some and that they should be applied?

it will at some point (in the iDrive's Navigation screen) require you to click the OPTIONS button on the iDrive controller pad.

Did the download manager ask you where to unzip the downloaded files? That's what happens in my Mac. I then save the files via the manager itself to the USB drive.

The USB stick can be NTFS, I applied the 2019-3 update yesterday using a drive formatted as such in a 2019 540i. As others described it too a moment to for iDrive to pop up a prompt to apply the update but I didn't have to instigate it. Took about 30-40 minutes to install the update.
