Insurance cost

I'm thinking about trading my F80 in on an M550. I know some of you have done that also. I'm curious if your insurance costs went up or down with that trade? Thanks!

Valid question, however you need to check rates in your area. Vehicle ratings are by State.

Not the info you're asking about but my insurance went down going from a Ford Fusion Sport to an M5. I knew I was overpaying some, but I was not expecting a cheaper rate for the M5. That being said, I live in Michigan so my insurance rates are crazy as we have some of the highest (if not the highest) in the country.

Anyway the reason I bothered replying is vehicle price and engine size don't make a huge difference in insurance costs, it's more based on theft rates where you live, the number of claims they see on a car of a similar type (ie are young, irresponsible kids buying them and crashing them) and how expensive the car is to fix.

Personally I'd suggest you do what I did: find a VIN of a M550 similar to what you want and call your insurance agent and ask them to quote the insurance for that car, but make sure they quote the same coverage you currently have. That also being said, if you've been with the same insurance co for a while, switching can drop your price a lot (or at least it does in Michigan). Prices creep up year after year and get reset when you switch - no idea why.

True but I was just looking for a general trend from one model to another. The M3 is an expensive car to insure. It would be nice to not move to an even more expensive model.

I have a 2017 540XI lease ending in spring. Asked my agent to give me an idea on a 540 and 550. He only had 2019, but the 540 would run $471.00 a half and a 550 would go $509.00. A little surprised, since I thought the spread would be greater. An Audi A7 would run me $569.00. Multiple car and homeowners discount applied.

I drive a 2019 M550ix and the wife drives a 2018 M3 Comp F80. She pays $80 more on a 6 month policy than I do through USAA. You have to remember rates vary wildly state to state. We both have similar driving records.

I did exactly this. My rate went down by $60-100 for the year.

Need to know drivers driving record, age, sex, location, coverage limits, deductibles, add-ons such as oem parts, whether agreed value or depreciated value, etc... Insurance rates vary widely by the above factors.

For instance, some insurance carriers will not pay for BMW dealer body shop repair estimates and will tell customers to pay difference or use one of their approved body shops (and aftermarket or used parts) . Others (such as Geico, AIG, Pure) will cover all oem new parts and dealer labor. I can't begin to tell you the number of people who learned the hard way that their insurance company wouldn't pay dealer body shop rates/fees for repairs.

Then there's liability limits (stacked/unstacked), deductibles, etc.. Some states have different uninsured motorist laws.....

This thread needs data, or its value is watered down. And simply because your BMW is $x more or less than a previous car doesn't tell the whole story...

Anyone looking for insurance, show them this message and get intelligent answers to your question.

Trust me there is no good roads here to enjoy driving like the guys in Germany do. Plus our maximum legal speed is 110kmh
