Winter tire configuration on M550
So I am trying to use the original 664M wheels to get winters mounted for our M550,, bought 669 with Pirellis a couple of months ago for Summer.
Trying to figure out the right size,,, so should it be 245/40/19 square but then the rear wheel is wider I believe 19x9 (would a 245 even fit) or should it be the OEM staggered 245 front and 275 rears. I have seen folks selling winter setups on 664s but not sure if they selling all square wheels,,heard BMW does sell square setup 664s .. |

If you have staggered wheel sizes...then you would use staggered tire sizes. If you have a square wheel set-up...then use a square winter tire set-up.
I went with a staggered 18" wheel/tire set-up last year because the wheels I used (a staggered set of 18" Style 37 MPars) is what I had. They had been sitting in my shed unused since 2012. After a test fit to see if they'd fit over my f06 GC's brakes (they did) and working diligently on a wheel/tire configuration to make sure the offset would work with tires that fit on the wheels...it all worked out. The Style 37 MPar wheels were off my old e38 7 series: (totally different offset specs than the normal f06 wheels...which required the homework using a calculator to determine if they'd fit: www.willtheyfit.com)
And those wheels got mounted with Michelin X-Ice xi3 dedicated winter tires: (again, diligent homework to make sure they fit the wheels & had the correct circumference/diameter that was within spec for the f06):

I have M550i and here in Europe, the “technical list” for my car allows only 245/40/19 (and some 18s) for winter tires. I used that size for the first season. Car performance went down, fast acceleration from zero was much worse, and high speed cornering was worse. So regardless the technical list, I switched to 275/35/19 on rear and now I’m not able to tell a difference when compared to my summer 245/35/20 fronts and 275/30/20 rears.

Spoke with TR and local Tire shop. Tire Rack recommends some thing in the middle like 255/40/19 in a square setup,,, Local tire shop insists on doing the OEM staggered set i.e. 245/40/19 front and 275/35/19 rear.

Also consider which part of Indiana you'll be driving. If you're in the southern part of the state and it will be mostly cold/wet or cold/dry...then performance winter tires could be considered and the wider staggered set-up will be similar to your summer set-up (like bojler from the EU mentions).
But if you're closer to the northern the part of Indiana (Great Lakes region) that gets a combination of more snow/ice/sleet/freezing rain/rain as well as the cold/dry and cold/wet...then you may want to consider snow/ice winter tires that are narrower for the times you'll be driving in deep snow. Good luck in your decision...as you can see there are multiple ways to go based on the staggered wheels you're going to be using as well as your location and the type of weather and roads you'll be driving on.

I dont want to buy another set of wheels as I have the staggered 664s sitting in the garage, I bought the 669s for Summer performance and looks. According to DT, getting something in the middle like 255 in a square setup would be the best scenario. So my set up per DT would be 255/40/19 on 19x8 front wheel and 255/40/19 on 19x9 rear wheels. Does this sound right ?? The challenge is that I have to work with the staggered wheels that I already have. |

Since you have staggered wheels (instead of a square set-up)...I would look for 245/40/19 (front) & 255/40/19 (rear) with the size wheels you have (8x19 {f} & 9x19 {r}). An 8 " wheel is best suited for a tire that is between 225mm-235mm with leeway for a tire with a minimum width of 215mm or a max width of 245mm....which is why I suggest asking DT if they tire you're looking at comes in a 245/40/19 size. (see chart below) BTW, I was in the same situation as you last year...I had a set of staggered set of 18" Style 37 MPars that had been stored in my shed since 2012. And I needed/wanted a dedicated set of winter tires for my f06 650iX GC. Once I tested the wheels to see if they would fit over the brakes (they did)...I had to figure out what size tires that could be mounted on 8"x18" front wheels & 9.5"x18" rear wheels. I ended up with 245/45/18 {f} & 255/45/18 {r} Michelin X-Ice xi3 tires...and they worked great.

Just curious, the OEM 664 that I currently have are 9inch in the rears but they came with 275s from the factory contrary to the chart above. The folks at DT feel it will be OK and no performance / safety compromise with mounting 255 on the front i.e. on 8 inch width and 255 on the 9 inch rears vs. just getting staggered 245/275 i.e. OEM spec. I also looked at getting a set of dedicated 19 inch square wheels but I know the wife is not going to like having 2 extra sets of wheels sitting in the garage. |

Since your front/rear wheels are 8"x19" & 9"x19"respectively...they both can be mounted with 245/40/19 winter tires...and they would still be the same height (at least it comes out that way when I use one of my go-to wheel/tire calculators: www.willtheyfit.com
Check the info below to see if I'm using the correct wheel specs & tire specs...again, when I run the info below...you can run a square set of tires on these staggered wheels and they should be within the 2mm allowance mentioned in the BMW info below (see text highlighted in green). Just make sure that whoever mounts your wheels...puts the 9" wheels on the rear axle!:
