They added a booster to make up for the lesser wattage but the solution has attracted a lot of complaints.

That’s simply not true, I have a 2020 limited x with the upgraded sound system and it’s at best a little better then the base bmw sound, not close to the Harmon

It's my first Jeep, so never had previous models and can't say about their sound system. But I can assure you that the Alpine (mid grade system) in my 2021 GCL is way superior to my HK in the 540i.

The funny thing is that HK's website still lists the 5 series system at 600 watts, but it states 464 watts on BMW's website. When building one online, B&W isn't available anymore as an option.

There is no actual amplifier anymore, just the booster itself. Honestly, it feels like it doesn't even output 464 Watts

Congrats on the new 540i. As someone that has a M550i and an X3M40i, you definitely made the right choice. I can't get my wife out of her X3, though I'd love to. I bought the M550i for long distance cruising in retirement as the X3 is punishing in comparison, though I have the adaptive suspension so not a fair comparison. Much quieter cabin in the M550i as well. You did well and your car looks to be spec'd very nicely. The B58 has an awesome cold start sound on the X3 (though I wouldn't want it if I lived in an apartment complex!). Good power and mileage. Great car.

The M40i engine certainly has more character, but the 540i is much more luxurious.

Thoughts?
I had 540i before, and drove X3 M40i for a few times.

I'd take 540i any day. Even though the performance difference is noticeable, it's completely negated by the fact that X3 is an SUV: 540i feels more planted, more fun to drive, more sophisticated, smoother, more comfortable.

You hit the nail on the head. I feel the exact same after taking it home and driving it the last few days.

Id go for it. Looks similar to mine. The M sport package sets it off .
