BMW’s the new 5 series (BMW Korea)

BMW Korea said Monday that its new models of 5 and 6 series sedans will be unveiled at the world premiere taking place in South Korea on May 27, the first time an imported carmaker here is hosting the world premiere here.

The carmaker said, it will also be the first time for a foreign automaker to reveal the new model series -- not just a specific trim of the new models -- in the country, apart showcasing two world premiere models at once.

BMW Korea said it has decided to hold the world premiere in Korea based on the popularity of 5 series and 6 series in the local market.

As of 2020 April, Korea sold the most 5 series sedans in the world with accumulated sales of 196,000 units since the launch in 1995, while it was ranked second-largest market globally for the 6 series.

Under the theme of “drive the new norm,” BMW Korea said the world premiere will take place at its track inside the BMW Driving Center in Yeongjongdo, Incheon. The launch event will be also livestreamed via its online video channel, BMW Korea said.

BMW Korea (CEO Han Sang-yun) announced that the world premiere of the new models of the BMW 5 and 6 series will be held at the BMW Driving Center on the 27th.

It is the first time in the history of imported cars in Korea to introduce a model series as a world premiere, rather than a detailed trim of the model released in Korea. It is also the first in Korea to show two World Premier models at the same time.

This is a result of BMW Group's strong will to keep its promise to hold the World Premier in Korea when BMW Group executives visited Korea in November, despite the fact that the 2020 Busan Motor Show was originally canceled due to Corona19. The BMW Group highly appreciated the importance of the Korean market and Korea's successful response to Corona 19 despite the global pandemic.

In addition, the popularity of the 5 series and the 6 series in the Korean market played a large role in determining the world premiere in Korea. As of April 2020, Korea is one of the most important markets in the world, with the fifth series being the first in the 5 series and the second in the 6 series. In particular, the BMW 5 Series is the most popular representative business sedan in Korea, with approximately 196,000 units sold from 1995 to April 2020 when BMW Korea was founded.

BMW Korea will host this World Premier event as a face-to-face, non-contact event using the BMW Driving Center track to ensure the safety of participants and prevent the spread of Corona 19 amid the risk of corona 19's re-proliferation. Under the theme of 'DRIVE THE NEW NORM', we are preparing an unusual launch event that can only be done by BMW in the corona era. The launching event will also be broadcast live through digital channels.

On the other hand, BMW Korea not only held this world premiere, but also continued to build a BMW driving center, win orders for parts from domestic companies, invest in R & D centers and Anseong parts logistics center, and conduct various social contribution activities. BMW Korea will continue to create diverse social values by coexisting with Korean society with leadership and responsibility through active domestic investment. It will also set new communication standards for the post-corona era industry.

I'm actually surprised to read the 6GT is being included in the LCI launch of the 5 series. Given the G32 6GT was originally launched some time after the G30/31 5 Series and thus already included some improvements over the G30/31, I wasn't expected its LCI update to happen until next year.

Yes the GT 640i is still available in overseas markets. Great car (Best and most compelling GT of all)but could not find enough buyers here in the US during 2018-2019. BMWUSA stopped importing it from MY2020.

We used to have the 640i GT (as xDrive) in Australia but it was discontinued at the start of MY20. We still have both the 620d GT and 630i GT downunder - RWD only.
