540 Oil change
Just completed an oil change on BMW 540 w/ B58 engine. A couple of resources I wanted to share:
https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/g...nce/1VnYfxTpte Drain plug is 16mm or 17mm. Tech doc says 16mm. Watched a B58 oil change video says 17mm. I used 17 and worked fine - but forgot to try 16mm. There is a cover on the drain plug that is not pictured in above link. You simply rotate to remove the cover, giving you access to drain plug. Oil filter housing is 32mm - and in a crappy spot on driver side of engine near fire wall. Used 32mm w/ universal joint and extension to remove. Used center of front axle support to lift with my low profile floor jack and set front wheels down on rhino ramps. Picture of front axle support in link below. https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/g...way/1VnYcMLZy0 Filled with 5 quarts and then drove around block and checked oil level. Told me I was a quart low. Added 1 quart and all good. System holds 6.5 but I started with 5 to avoid overfilling in the event I did not get a full drain. Interesting thread on BMW oil specs https://www.bimmerworld.com/BMW-Engine-Oil/ Last edited by scoale; 09-14-2020 at 07:43 PM.. |

Oil Filter Problem
Took 2017 540i in for an oil change today. Car is out of warranty. When BMW mechanic took the old filter out, it had broken up. See Picture. BMW says that the oil filter housings must be replaced and it will take 11 shop hours and cost $2600+. Has anyone had a problem like this?

Thank you for this detail.
I'm concerned - this sounds like a giant cock up *if* there are parts of the filter left inside that have to be somehow fished out. Completely different scenario: I often destroy an oil filter when taking it out of the bike - but again, different architecture - it's often required because of how the headers are positioned leaving almost no room to work. Doesn't result in having to do more work replacing things. |

My 2018 540i is due an oil sevice in 2500 miles. Car is currently on 30500 miles. It was last done at 17,000 in August 2019. I am dreading the thought of this happening to me. My saving grace is the car has warranty till August 2021 so hopefully I get it in for the service around March 2021 As I've only bought the car this August, I plan to do interim oil and filter changes around every 8000 miles to hopefully stop this from happening. I think 18,000 in between oil and filter changes is too long.

Wow never seen this must be only few cars may not be a wide problem. Would love to know what would cause this.
I highly recommend change oil 10.000 miles or 1 year I don't think less than really helps but it does not hurt only your pocket Thanks for the pictures and information sorry for your loss |

Changing oil every 10k is crazy in my opinion. I have M550 and it's not my daily I put on 1200 miles last year and I changed the oil twice. I do pay for 1 out of pocket since I have a maintenance plan. saying that only hurts your pocket book? Well if additional 200 bucks in 10 months hurts your pocket book please do not own a BMW.....

You want to change twice a year go for it why not just change every month just because you own a BMW Give me a break do some research then talk to me You can't teach a old dog new tricks FYI I own Mercedes s550 2020 and BMW 5 series If you want to follow BMW schedule they do not recommend twice a year so you should at a minimum listen to BMW But then again you know everything |

Like I said it was my opinion and that's what i do stop crying... also if you do research you will find out that these n63ss burn oil so why not changed it every 6 month... and changing oil every month is bit too excessive 😊 .. also person that brags what they drive ??? I love it .... grow up buddy ...

Gents, lets not judge each other. If you use the car in a normal way (i.e. not on a racetrack) engine experts recommend changing oil after 15 th. kms (approx. 10 th. miles) or once a year. That will keep your engine up and running for a long time.
Should anyone wish to do it more often, it is up to him, it is not about the engine but only about one´s good feeling. You can also wash your car dayly should you wish to. |
