Transmission lumpy?
Does anyone else notice their transmission sometimes not have a super smooth change at low speeds or when you're creeping along in stuck and go traffic? My vehicle is a 2018 BMW 540i rear wheel drive.

In my F10 I've noticed perhaps a dozen times in over 2 years what feels like you occasionally catch the gear change software out. I couldn't even describe the exact circumstances, it's always at low speed, most likely the change from 1st to second but could be second to third, and I think it's when I'm building speed then ease off the throttle then back on and perhaps the gearbox goes to change up then changes back down again.
It's very similar to a poor or rough gear change in a manual car. It's never happened often enough for me to really think about it, but I do think - in my case - it's where my actions fall outside the gearbox programming! Never noticed it at anything other than crawling speeds. |

When it starts happening, has anyone simply flicked the shifter to M/S and then back to D, to break any driver/situation adaptation? If not try it, it may be due to the current driving situation and resulting inputs. Get it back to a 'fresh' start.

I have never experienced this in over 39K miles now. However, I frequently flick the lever to the left to M/S mode in traffic, where I think the transmission staying in gear makes the car much more easily driven. I use it for performance frequently also. I think this allows the ZF8 to mimic Drivelogic 2, which I always used on the DCT in my former M4. Maybe this explanation is the reason I have not had the described problems?

I have the same exact issue. When driving slow as in a parking lot, 1st to 2nd shifting is jumpy and that happens quite often. I wonder if clearing the transmission adaptations will fix this, however I think BMW warns against clearing the adaptations unless it is part of certain repair procedures.

Just picked up a used 540i and noticed this issue, its mainly in traffic for me, its like the engine isnt dropping speed automatically between shifts. I'm going to try resetting the adaptations in the transmission and see if this gets rid of the issue.

I have this same issue when I first start the car in the morning. I let the car idle until the RPM doesn't settle down (usually takes a few seconds). Then I take off but I don't gun the car right off the bat.
There's a stop sign not too far from my house so I lightly accelerate the car. When I slow down, the car kind of gets all lumpy and stuff. At first I thought it was the turbos. My factory warranty expires in March of 2023. I'm taking the car in Feb for an inspection. I'll have them take a look at that stuff.

2018 540 with exactly above symptoms, resetting adaptation, changing transmission fluid did nothing.

Never even heard of that until you mentioned it. My 520D doesn't have the symptoms being described by research Iv done on Vanos Solenoid symptoms. But gives me something else to look into

I always drive with my car in Sport mode and I have to say that occasionally shifts feel a bit abrupt or clunky at low speeds, but I have always ascribed that to the sport mode. Not enough of a problem for me to worry about. --Bob

I set up my Sport Individual mode to use comfort settings for transmission for this reason.
