I like how hard they had to cope and come off as positive so they get to keep reviewing cars.

Nice golf kart I guess.

Perhaps other reviewers skew their reviews to pander to the manufacturers, but I would say Throttle House don't. They often roast cars for specific things as well as for value for money, and not infrequently their conclusion is "nice car, but not for this money" or "competitor X is better". They become especially picky as the price of a car increases (see their Ferrari reviews, for example).

My take is that Hyundai really did try hard to make a fun car, and I think the consensus across reviews of the Ioniq 5N is thanks to real fun-factor rather than a conspiracy theory.

My main question is does the 5N is fun in the long term and not just on first drive? Does the fun-factor wear off once you explored all the gimmicks and tested all the modes? This is something that is hard to judge without really owning a car long term, and I'd say that compared to regular ICE cars where there is a wealth of experience to draw from and make a reasonable judgment of long-term appeal based on a short drive, the 5N has a fairly unique value proposition and I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that "fun on track for a day" translated to "still fun to own after 5 years".

Sir, this car costs as much as the M2 I just bought.

I can tell you which one I'd rather own.

At this price point, if it's meant to be a "toy" and "fun" it's competing with a hell of a lot of used and new cars. For a BEV, sure it's not as boring as a M3P with it's atrocious suspension and ham-fisted lack of configurability due to Lord Elon's decree, but it still is a boring overweight BEV cope-mobile. It's heavy, nearly as much as my X5M, in a smaller package so the consumables are gonna be more expensive, they're running 275/35/21s on it so $$. Brakes we already know are gonna be costly, and lastly the charging aspect is still there. No amount of fake gears, or that atrocious fake "engine" noise will compensate for that. I'd be more interested in a BEV like what the late Ken Block drove - a no compromise brutalist machine that is just fun, but alas nobody wants to make that. The Nevera I drove was a literally 911 TTS snoozefest. Fast, sure, but incredibly boring.

I appreciate that more companies are setting money on fire by making BEVs to appease governments, but I don't anticipate this will sell particularly well, or escape the insane depreciation other BEVs experience. I would anticipate Toyota will sell more S-FR's if they actually bring them to the market and make them available in quantity. Hell I'd even take one just to dick with it.

Also seriously, N? N is what they chose?

That's funny right there. That it doesn't even weigh as much as your BMW suv.

And I think any passengers would rather be in the 4-door. Different market (than your M2).

People forget that it costs about 93k CAD taxes in.

It also has a max range of about 400km per charge, and considerably less if you stomp you foot down.

With that price point, you can own a ton of other cars more fun that isn't EV.

Hell you can buy a used F80 and a tesla model 3 together if you wished.

Is it funny? It's within spitting distance.

Here let me help,
It's 500lbs more than a f90 m5
It's a thousand pounds more than my g87
It's more than a thousand pounds more than a g80
It's 800 pounds more than a M3P
It's 800-900lbs more than a CT5V
It's 1200lbs more than a RS3
It weighs the same as a Cayenne Turbo GT or Urus

All brands are guilty of getting heavier, especially with the coming hybrid powertrains that are coming to market but... Can I just get a raw scary electric car that I can get some wheel slip and get sideways in? That has good bones with decent suspension geometry that isn't a cope-box?

Electric can be cool, this ain't it.

But it's still faster in the straight line than your M2

.... ok? And? Do I just pull out the mac to deal with it in a straight line like when I spank plaids? Straight line speed is boring.

My feeling is, as an EV, it should be "fun" on its own right. If it has to use artificial gauge and sound gimmicks and artificial shifting to emulate an ICEV, then that's your answer. ICEV are fun because of the ICE.

On any of my ICE vehicles, if I want some fun, I just step deep into the throttle. If I screw up and miss a shift and over-rev the engine or break the gearset, it's real rather than a stupid manchild giggle.

That's what makes ICE fun. There are actual mechanical limits. I'd get bored with the N rather quickly because there is no risk of breaking it.

Barely, and mostly due to AWD.

The G87 M2 runs 11.3 @ 120mph.

The IONIQ 5N runs 11.1-11.2 @ 123mph.

You can tune the G87 M2 to be considerably faster with a 800$ JB4 (if you don't want to FEMTO) or unlock the DME and tune it then.

You can't tune an electric car, so it's stuck at what it's making.

It will be faster 90% of the use most of us have.
Electric cars getting better and better, and this one is a great example for a huge step in the right direction.

Faster is faster, nobody cares why.

I am pretty sure they will be a market for tuning an electric car at some point. It's purely via Software, no hardware needed.

Kudos to Hyundai for making this N trim EV. So much more appealing than a model 3. I would never own one but nice to see the effort.

This. I would rather have an ICE, m2 included. BUT if I had to have an EV (and perhaps down the road we will), I appreciate the effort they, and only they, have made to make it more ICE like, i.e. fun. They are actually trying to create a car catered towards enthusiasts. That should be applauded. And maybe it isn’t really that difficult to program any EV this way, but no one else has to my knowledge.

Fully agree - great job by Hyundai injecting some life into an EV. Seems like the reviews are overwhelmingly positive with many appreciating the silliness of simulating an 8 speed DCT and saying how well it can fool you.

Car manufacturers are just throwing whatever they can into EV's to make them more entertaining to sell. Lets throw all these gimmicks in there like "fake revs" "fake limiter bouncing" etc etc.

It reminds me of what I see whenever I go out these days. Parents just throwing electronics at kids to keep them occupied so they don't have to deal with them. lol

Imagine being the type of person who gets mad at a new and different car out on the market.

Every review I've seen of this car has been overwhelmingly positive. Even Misha was blown away by it at the ring. The car brings joy to everyone I've seen drive it, and above anything else, that's what matters.

It's not for me, but I still think it's pretty damn cool. I dig it.
