My first car was a 1975 AMC Pacer, two-tone butterscotch over chocolate brown, similar to this inter web photo I pilfered except on mine the chocolate brown followed the body lines up over the roof (made it look like a big, ugly picnic basket). It had a straight six 232ci and floor shift manual 3 spd. The shifter was so worn that if you didn't get the 1-2 shift perfect it would jam in 2nd and you had to take the shifter apart and wiggle the shift rods into neutral so you could change gears. I kept a shifter tool kit on the floor in the back seat for when it jammed up. I got to the point where I could fix it in about 3 minutes on the side of the road. My older brother gave the car to me after thoroughly trashing it to the point where it ran on only four cylinders, barely, and the front suspension was so bent you couldn't let go of the steering wheel without immediately heading hard for the rhubarb. I had to pull the head off the motor and get it rebuilt...it was full of bent valves. I couldn't fix the front suspension because it turned out that he had bent the control arm mounts on the drinker's side so I got chummy with the guys at one of the local tire shops and had them save me any decent tires they came across that would fit. I needed to replace the front tires about every 6-800 miles because the front end was so messed up.
Do I wish I still had it? Nope! It burned down on the side of the road one day and I was not the least bit bothered.
Fun Fact: The Pacer's passenger's doors were 4" longer than the driver's doors.
Great story. The Pacer was not AMC's best effort and you got one that was already thrashed. AMC built some nice cars over the years but the Pacer was not one of them.

First car. 1965 Chevy Impala with a 287 and powerglide. Dad gave it to me and I drove it till the cam wore round and never missed it for a second after that.

Second car was a white with vinyl top two-door 396 big block 1967 Chevelle SS with a 4 speed rock crusher. Hell yeah I miss that one.

Like this but with Cragers. And with a borrowed pair of 7" slicks I think I have a National Speedway time slip somewhere that shows low 13s.

Did I mention I miss this one? But have had lots of cars since. Some good. Some less than good. And frankly, my M235i ranks up there with the best.

You got that right. A friend had a Gremlin that he modded into a very fast, agile and good looking car. The AMX was cool too. The Pacer, not so much but it was mine and a lot of my friends either had to beg to borrow their parent's cars or they had nothing at all. In that respect I was a little better off, but not much. LOL

I had a buddy growing up that had a Gremlin, we dropped a V8 and manual trans in it. The thing was pretty quick but had a tough time hooking up.

Was Gremlin the one with the commercial - Hey lady, what happened to the rest of your car - or something along those lines?

First, no. It was a clapped out Audi 5000 that I wrecked. The only car I only slightly regret selling is my S50 E30 Alpina B6 replica (but with genuine parts). But I sold it to an enthusiast because I wasn't driving it and it was kind of decaying under a cover in my garage.

I dont even regret selling the LeMans, it was a 67 two tone with the 326 and a 4 barrel. I had it when gas was over $4 a gallon and it was KILLING me.

The '67 LeMans is one fine-looking car. It was one of my favorites of that era.

For sure. Back in those days we were just happy to have a car to drive!

My second car was a '68 Javelin so I have an affection for AMC. They made some great cars. My '68 was the SST with a 290. I loved that car.

Here is a photo of my girlfriend at the time. The car is long gone but I married the girl.

What was your very first car? Do you wish you still had it or are you glad it's gone?

I'll start: 1961 VW Bug I bought for $650 in 1967. I drove the wheels off of it it for 3 years and sold it for $600. I loved that car. Probably unsafe at any speed but we weren't thinking of safety in those days. Fun, efficient car.
My first car was a 2003 325i. Absolutely loved that thing to death. Had to sell it and the new owner blew the engine on the way home messing around on the highway. I was heartbroken. I hope to return to the e46 chassis someday, it was such a great car.

My first car was a silver '81 hatchback 200SX.

Slowest-revving car I've ever owned (including diesels). Not much stock, but much more fun after installing a set of Konis.

Would love to have it back for a day (nostalgia), but wouldn't want it cluttering up the garage today.

Thanks. We met in '67 and we've been married since '72. I'm a lucky guy for sure.

Of course I remember those commercials. My favorite was the gold flsh bowl commercial.

96 , 5MT, MAXIMA, with this bullet proof VQ30DE. Own it for 10 years

1st car, I was 17. Damn it was a step up from my friend civic/ mx3/ mk3 2.slow

150k km, paid 3500$, A1 , nothing to do. Back then , those were going for 8k+$. The guy was a doctor and get tired having issue to sell it because 5mt, most of the interested people were taxi drivers.

Loved this car, but rust get into the frame rails. Body was CLEAN, rails, well, gone. Super unsafe. Sold it to a scrap yard, even the guy was like : you crazy man ! this car's clean. Told him to look the floor, and he said ' well flinstones car'

Was married in '75 so just a few years behind you in the marriage debt. Didn't meet till '74, though, at 19yo.

Here's a funny Javelin TV commercial with Richard Dryfuss, and others. Think I notice Ben Stiller in there too, lol.

I still have it, its a 1983 Porsche 944. I got it back in 1999 and its been in storage for probably 10-12 years now. The timing belt snapped, and I have all the parts to fix it but all my other cars keep breaking. You can kinda see it in this photo.

Right?! OMG, that Z20 engine was an absolute dog. Going from 55 to 80 took, what, 40 seconds? Like no joke. it was a lifetime.

Aside from the wheels, this looks a lot like mine, I cleared it all the way around too. Much nicer look, especially in the rear.

You put a Y pipe on it too?

I really did like the car as I said - the B&M short shifter was excellent. I initially had trouble with the ignition coils, but once I got everything replaced, it was a solid car. I bought it with something like 80K on it and drove it till 220K km or more and then traded it in for $500 to the BMW dealer just so I didn't have to deal with any paperwork or tire kickers.

I'm reading it funny, you meant that you bought it in '99, not that you sold and bought it back, right?

Are we gonna find your car in a 'barn find' video 20 years from now? Fix her, man!!!!

I got it in 99, drove it for a few years, and it broke down so it put it in storage. So yeah it will basically be a barnfind. I am thinking about a harness bar, two racing buckets, suspension and brake work, and make it into a little mountain run car.
