Check engine light on and off and on

The CEL went on in my wife’s 2017 530ix. It’s totally stock and she is a very safe and mellow driver.

2 weeks ago the CEL came on and there were no notifications. I opened and closed the gas cap. And in a day or 2 it went away.

It’s back again. Still no notifications.

Any ideas for a DIY fix ? Otherwise
It’s off to the dealer to get nailed.

Thanks

Scan the codes, it will tell you exactly why it went on as it is logged. Since it went off, it is something that triggers a fault but doesn't sustain it, so after a certain numbers of miles, it goes off. Something like an O2 sensor or even a small misfire. How many miles?

You should pick up your own OBD reader. Plenty of cheap Bluetooth options on Amazon where you can read them with your phone. Just good to have if you own a BMW.

Thanks, I will try to pick one up I just never used one, I hope its pretty straight forward. The car has about 32,000 miles and its a 2017 we have owned since new.

Super straight forward. Plug it in the port, install the app on your phone and "Scan Codes". Faults will be listed after the scan.

I have a Blue Driver that is super easy to use for all cars, including BMW.

I don't remember paying this much, but still worth it:

Or...like first mentioned (until you can pick up an OBD II scanner/reader)...in most of the USA, you can simply go to any autoparts store like Autozone/Advanced Auto/O'Reilly's/Pep Boys/NAPA/etc, and they will scan your OBD II codes FREE of charge. If they can't give you a print out...be prepared to jot down or take a pic of the codes with your phone etc. Once you have the 5 digit DTC (diagnostic trouble code)...you can simply google them or go to the website below and enter them for info as to what may have caused them and possible solution to fix the issue.

Click the following link to enter the generic 5 digit "P" codes...or the 6 digit BMW hex codes: https://bmwfault.codes/

Since OBD II has been federally mandated in the US since 1996...there is tons of info about most OBD II codes due to time & the internet.

Take note of the info in the 3rd & 4th bullets in the info below:

My issue with this is I am not letting any Autozone etc. employee touch my car, even to just read codes. I am over the top, I know.

Totally understandable ...maybe they will let you insert the OBD II scanner into the port yourself...one can ask...and they can either say yes or no.

If their hands are dirty...I definitely would (politely) ask to do it myself. But I digress, I purchased my own generic OBD II scanner a long time ago.

Buy a $15 ELM327 BT OBD adapter and use Torque Lite on your Android or IOS device.

I bought one of those for my laptop (wired back then) for $40 around 20 years ago...paid for itself many times over. About 15 years ago I bought a bluetooth version...now I keep one in each car, they are so cheap on eBay.

I've had mine for ages. I use BMW specific software now but back in the day it worked as advertised.

Joe -not sure why I cannot reply to your post. I’m not loving the new app updates.

Thanks for the recommendation on blue driver. The unit told me it’s the active grills so at least they are under warranty (extended) by BMW. My appointment is for Tuesday.

Got it all cleaned up for service.

Nice! Looking good. Glad you’re happy with the BlueDriver. It’s a nice little adapter and app.

I haven't checked my Netscape email in many, many moons. I don't think I even can anymore. There must be well over 50K emails in there.

An exception can be made for an account that is not used anymore 😉
