Any word on if it will be compatible with older models with a firmware upgrade or coding?

Unfortunately I have a BMW ‘internal use only’ doc which says that due to lack of equipment this will never be available to pre LCI cars, including those with ID7 ‘lite’

Only on vehicles produced after July 2020 and certain series models.

Do you have any idea about the possibility of upgrading the lite ID7 to full version that supports OTA?

The same ‘internal use only’ document very firmly states that the functionality will not be upgraded due to ‘lack of equipment’ - it specifically says that OTA Remote Software Update will not be available.

There has been total confusion over this. Before buying the car I asked UK Customer Service and they confirmed in writing the car would have it. The Drivers Guide for my VIN confirmed it would have RSU. The printed manual in the car confirms RSU. After delivery, Connected Drive showed it as an available option but it wasn’t actually available.

I had a load of problems with ID7 ‘lite’ the Genius at my dealers couldn’t resolve even after talking to Deutschland so they did a total software overlay. This resolved most of the issues BUT RSU was not available. After yet more research the Genius finally got to the bottom of the problem - ID7 Lite is what is known as Service Pack 15 whereas full ID7 is Service Pack 18. I got hold of a copy of the internal document confirming the differences and they are significant - I think BMW (possibly inadvertently) missold the cars with ID7 Lite as the sales literature didn’t differentiate between Lite and full version. I can’t fault the dealer for trying to resolve the issue but BMW as a whole dealt with the issue appallingly.

And BMW keeps making it very messy. They announced a major update, but didn’t clarify that it won’t arrive for iDrive 7 “lite” cars. So I expect their problems on this front to continue.

Thanks for posting that. Sounds like a lot of good changes coming for cars made starting July if I am reading that correctly.

Interesting that Android Auto Google Map directions will show up in HUD. Curious if Apple CarPlay would do the same now? That would be a huge update.

It will also arrive for iDrive 7 cars via remote software updates this month. Though it does mention NFC hardware being limited to cars built after July. But since MY2020 lacks remote software update support it may be skipped. Not very clear on that front.

But looks like a solid update.

I have asked my contact in a dealers to verify if any of the enhancements will be available to ID7 Lite, at the dealers or does the update only apply to those cars with RSU. I have a horrible feeling none of the enhancements will be available to ‘Lite’ cars.

The Connected Drive App just had an update on iOS for compatible vehicles...which it states, as someone posted, are those manufactured after 7/1/2020.

Yeah BMW press release notes that the hardware for NFC (Digital Key) is likely not in older cars. But the MY2020 G30 never had digital key support.

The bigger one everyone is waiting on is if we'll get the 07/20 iDrive update and how complete it will be. The press release noted that older iDrive 7 cars will get this update, but without RSU for "lite" we're in a weird space.

On my 2020 G30, in the Settings menu, there's a "Legal Notice" for NFC device. So maybe the hardware is in fact, in the car?

Hi JStein55: Apple Key is available for 5 series manufactured after July 1st 2020. Do not want people to wait until August 1 to order their cars.

You almost freaked me out; just got my VIN number today for a LCI M5 Comp (going into production).
