In the US, the M550i isn’t very rare, but my 540d is one of 298. But in the UK, the 530d is fairly common.
Good shout so perhaps my 540i G31 'M sport Edition' where they only produced 1000 5er series across the board in M sport Edition trim, will become rare I suspect that it may be in a numerical way but not in a sought after way.

Any 540i wagon counts, IMO. Most people buy the diesel, with the claim that the torque is what made them do it, but in reality they just wanted to save on fuel and get something close to B58 performance.

Even in Germany, the land of the wagon, I can count on my fingers the number of 540is I have run across.

Diesel is the Devil's fuel.

I would say anything less that 1000 units per year in a particular market segment (North America for instance) would be considered rare-ish for BMW

Examples:
E39 M5
G30 M550
F90 M5
?? 1M coupe
E30 M3

There are more but those are just off the top of my head without looking up production numbers

540i can be quite economical in the real world. Had an outing last week and did a return journey of 145 miles and average of 41mpg, mostly 60mph limits and fair amount of traffic but thought that was amazing.

Since i've had the car (9 months) it's long term average is at 36mpg which is 4mpg better than my F31 340i was, so only guess that I don't drive the barge as hard

There are only 330 545e in the uk according to howmanyleft.co.uk so I would regard it as rare, although there are 12 available to buy on Autotrader so not hard to acquire!

Is that all, surprised at that, thought more of those would have been sold

Having said that I think this came out hurt before covid and we know car sales during that were well down. So perhaps after all , not a surprise

This will be down to the Mild Hybrid Technology in your 540i.

As my 540i standard B58 gets around 32-35mpg

It definitely can. We took a trip to Switzerland over New Year's, and in mixed driving (with average speeds) of about 60 percent Autobahn, 30 country roads, and 10 city, we averaged about 8 l/100km, which is nearly 30 mpg.

It was cold and the car was loaded with me, the wife, the kid, and a full trunk and rear pass. seat occupied with various odds and ends.

Quite impressive..

The fuel economy I could get, even hauling ass on the highway, always impressed me on my old 540i.

If you're interested in a street legal, built to race car, check out Factory Five.
Built right here in Massachusetts. They have many, many excellent reviews.
They will sell you the car turn key or in kit form for you to build yourself.
Several excellent YouTube videos out there.
