To be fair the 540i and 540d should be 530i and d coz it matches the engine size. 530i should be 520i. Not sure why they've done this weird mishmash of the numbers.

Years ago, for example, a 328 did indeed have a 2.8L engine. This was then increased in size to 3.0 L and a 328 became the 330. Since then BMW have standardised on a 500cc per cylinder capacity as this is the most thermally efficient size. So all 4 cylinder engines have a capacity of 2.0L and all 6 cylinders have a capacity of 3.0L. To differentiate between the different states of tune of each each version of the engine while still still keeping the same capacity, they now vary the last two digits of the model number ie 325, 328, 330, 335, 340 etc. It's very confusing to the layman but no doubt it makes sense to BMW. For old timers like myself who associate 328 with a 6 cyl engine, the new 328 with a 4 cylinder however, is just too much.

As you say with 2 & 3 litres capacities, in various tunes, it is more difficult. But it does appear the US market has a problem with some numbering and need to improve the 'placement' of the models. |
