2021 bmw m550

Hey everyone, new to the forum.
Thinking of upgrading from my 2016 BMW 528 to 2021 M550.
Came across this one

https://www.cargurus.com/Cars/link/361446415

What do you guys think ?
My main concern is the miles.
How’s the reliability on the 21+ models ?
TIA

Have a read of the threads in this forum. The only issues that seems quite common across the range is one of coolant leaks.
Engine appears to be reliable so far

A forum search will answer most of your questions about it. Short ans: N63TU2 onwards are very reliable. This one has the TU3, which will be even more reliable.

Miles don't seem that bad assuming it was maintained properly. Biggest concern from what I am seeing may be the dealer. Id definitely take a look at service history if I was you. Also for me I prefer the dynamic handling package but that's really up to you.

56k in 3-4 years means it was probably driven on the highway. Easy miles.

If everything checks out on inspection, I would have no reservations. BMW V8s do have potential to generate big bills though, so you would have to keep that in mind regardless.

Buy a good car and avoid aftermarket warranties, which usually cost more than any repairs would.

Looks fairly clean. It is missing driving assistance which includes Active Cruise Control among other things. That would be a non starter for me. This is not a highly optioned car but it does have Nappa leather, so that is a plus.

In terms of the mileage, it is a decent amount of miles for the year, but that would not scare me off and the price or savings reflects it. The N63TU2/3 V8 is proving to be just as reliable as the B58. They share the same annoying coolant leak issues which can be remedied easily. Have a look at the service history for leak repairs. The more the better because you know they have been done.

This may be the most reliable V8 BMW ever produced and I have owned just about all of them. Plenty of data out there on owner reliability and a great sample given the N63TU2/3 hit the M550 in 2017 in Europe and 2018 in the US.

They aren't more costly than an I6 or 4 banger if they don't break down, and they really haven't yet. The relationship or stereotype between a BMW V8 being more costly is purely driven by some bad BMW V8's of yesteryear. Hopefully someday that stigma will be gone if they continue to experience reliability. But yeah, people shoot from the hip on BMW V8 reliability because of past issues with other engines. BMW also has a great track record of bulletproof I6's which contributes to the N63TU2/3 stigma.

Sure, you have two more plugs and more oil to put in, so that service will cost more, but it's peanuts. Consider the Route 66 warranty for ~$3,000 for 7 years. It's worth the peace of mind even if you never use it. It is also a no brainer in terms of cost. Kind of negates the self insure thing.

Good luck with the search. I encourage you to read the G30 thread where we log issues. You will see the M550 is no less reliable than the other models.

It’s no surprise that I agree with everything you’re saying… lol.

Just want to add my 2 cents:

I would never buy one of these cars without the driver assistance AND panoramic camera for parking reasons

When I bought my 1st BMW in 2015 I was looking at the V8. The original N63 was fraught with so many problems I immediately decided to go with the bulletproof I6. I even asked my SA about it and he said BMW couldn't make a reliable V8 if the company's life depended on it. He said the "hot-V" didn't help.

It seems that BMW has decided to shed the unreliable-V8 stigma and really stepped-up its V8 game. I wouldn't hesitate to get the N63TU2/3, but in my retirement years, my world has shrunk considerably and I appreciate the increased mpg of the I6. It also has enough power to get me into plenty of trouble!

I did the same on the F10 going with the 535xi. Thank god I didn’t because it’s actually that engine that drives the negativity. That said, I didn’t skip a V8 in that car because I knew about the V8 issues, I skipped because I was going through a divorce and had to save a few bucks. Besides my first E30, that was the first V8 skip for me in a BMW. Great car.
