I just don't get these... aren't you literally just sucking in hot engine bay air?

I've wondered this myself...all the data I've seen out there doesn't seem to come to one consensus.

I can see it working if the setup was designed for it, or if there was simply too much custom crap in the engine bay to keep a normal air box in. But... if you're working with a normal engine, then I think a drop in filter into an OE air box designed to pull cool air will be better served for overall performance.

If you want noise, then I suppose it is a different story...

I was thinking about the hot air too.....but when you think about, it’s still sucking the same air the stock box does. Just more of it.
Plus as the car is moving, doesn’t it provide fresh air flow?

Depends on the air box design, most don't pull the hottest air from the middle of the engine bay. What I know for a fact is that every 10 degrees makes a difference in power delivery, so if you're sucking up the hottest air in the engine bay, it doesn't matter if you get more of it. Your car will start pulling timing, especially in the summer time if it gets hot where you're at.

Bit the bullet and ordered a BMS intake to go on my 540ix with MPPSK. Sounds like delivery will be a couple of weeks to the UK, but will report back findings 👍

Getting a bit carried away and am visiting a local garage about a res delete tomorrow too 😁

But it sits in the same position in the bay as the stock box.
It just has you leave off the top cover.
Wouldn’t it be sucking the same air as the stock box?

My ECU is getting tuned this week, I’ll ask my BMW tech what he thinks of them.
Looking forward to seeing your feedback

I don't know your OE airbox design. You should see where it gets the fresh air supply from. From my experience, there is no noticeable power increase with these CAI that are misleading and draw no cold air. They just make your engine bay noisier. If anything, on a hot day and normal driving, you'll probably lose power with this design.

What about this one? It looks like it’s designed to shield from the top.

Anyone seen these?

I bought mine a few months back and I was always a believer about that sucking hot air but I think this time Around maybe different due to the oem air/liquid intercooler change. You won't hear that normal old school BOV sound instead youlll hear incar a spool/suction sound along with a flush toilet sound.
Took me a while to figure out the sound until I remembered these B58's have that new liquid intercooler setup. There has been a slight difference in power for the better but I'm also running a Stage1 with Sprintbooster. Wonder if things will change once summer hits strong..

be safe

I got this intake and installed a few days ago. Initial impression is that I don't hear anything. Really disappointing. I had BMS on my f30 n55 and it sounds really good.

I think the additional intake silencer needs to be removed for it to sound any better.

I can't speak to power gains but I can say that the OEM intake filter seemed very restrictive. It has an extra layer of foam , again, to keep things quiet.

That's disappointing to hear (excuse the pun). Mine is due to arrive any day now and I was starting to get excited. I wasn't expecting any power gain at all, but certainly an improvement in sound.

What engine do you have?

B58 540i.

I am hoping to find a way to bypass the intake silencer in the next few weeks. Maybe that will do it.

I installed the BMS Billet on my B58 540i with MPPSK this afternoon and have to say, the difference in sound is pretty significant for me.

At half- power acceleration I notice a pretty loud intake whistle / whoosh sound. At full chat the sound isn't much different than before. Perhaps a little more burble than before?

The only thing I'm not particularly happy with is the fit of the mounting bracket. No matter how much I adjust the various parts, I can't get the bracket to sit flush so it doesn't fill me with confidence. I'll have to keep an eye on it to make sure nothing is working loose.

I have the same step and exact same experience.

Same thing happened with me. it actually touches the foam part protecting the bonnet. Not a big fan of how it fits.
