Dinan ignition coil (n series style)

These look like a new offering. Any experience, thoughts or opinions?

https://www.dinancars.com/products/e...arts/D650-0004

I asked my Dinan shop about these and they are pretty new. He also said there are rarely any noticeable performance gains from coils claiming higher output, but he did go on to say that the BMW coil is $90 bucks and these are 1/3 of the cost. He said when I need spark plugs at 50k it may be worth giving these a shot at the same time as coils are a common failure so do these with the plugs to save the labor.

I may order these now and be the guinea pig before Dinan notices they are 1/3 of the cost for something that is supposed to be a superior upgrade.

Do the colors of the coils show? These come in Red, Blue and Black. Anyone want to vote what color preference theirs would be?

Coils are are a maintenance part for all intents and purposes. There are no power gains associated with coils themselves -- unless the coils they are replacing have degraded to the point they are less efficient and causing idle issues / misfires. In those circumstances the new coils would provide power -- but it is simply getting the power back that you didnt realize was gone in the first place (resetting back to baseline). In the case of the M550i its new enough I wouldn't expect any of of those types of issues unless you are high mileage. The additional output energy advertised is the spark energy not horsepower. That may be where some confusion comes in.

Coils for most BMW's are tucked underneath the engine cover and are not outwardly visible -- but that hasnt stopped the colors from being the more popular options --- by far.

Pricing isn't changing anytime soon. The whole point was to be the best value on the market so there would be next to no reason to go elsewhere.

Nice! Thank you for this. It answers all my questions.

Coils are a maintenance item and I typically don't change until I begin experiencing misfires. That being said your shop is right that changing it with spark plugs may save you in labor since you have to remove the ignition coils to get to the spark plugs. The color doesn't matter because the coils are under engine cover.

Thanks, I think I am going to wait until I hit 50k miles. Since these really won't add any performance and the blingy colors don't show, other than the attractive price, I may just do the plugs at 50k and address all coils when one fails. I am all for preventative maintenance, but I may not opt to fix what's not broken at 50k and it seems like coil failure will be much later than 50k miles.

Yeah I never change it with spark plugs. But if 1 coil goes just change all 8 because the others are not far behind in failure.

Yep, that's my plan.

So.. sorry to resurrect an old thread but I'm sure others share this same question. My M550i is a MY 2020 with the N63T3 engine, and per the Dinan website, these coils don't fit my car. So I went to my favorite N63 engine reference here and learned the following: "The T3 ignition coils are a newer design similar to the latest B-series modular engines and ignition voltage is 50% higher. The T3 also gets different spark plugs." So: Don't put the Dinan coils on a MY2020+ N63.

Having said that, at the risk of hijacking the thread (hey, it's an old thread anyway) it looks like my "new for the T3 engine" OEM spark plug is 12-12-0-057-704, that appears to be Denso part SXB24LCFD6. Can anybody recommend a "one step colder" version of that plug to use with my BM3 tune that's compatible with the 50% higher voltage from my T3 coils?
