Yep this would be a very welcome upgrade... It is certainly quick enough as is, but nearly 400bhp from the upgraded lump would be a noticeable jump I feel. There are also rumours that in the UK we will finally get the 550i as well for 2020!

I wish we had the 550i available here as well. Would be a nice replacement for the 540i.

Hoping they release MY20 info soon. My guess is if a new B58 is coming it will be the M1 version with increased torque.

that would be nice! for me to get to 400hp (almost), I need a jb4 or racechip, which adds about 50hp allegedly...haven't tried it yet as I find my 540 in sport mode to be pretty damn fast as it is and I'm not racing anyone at 50 years old...

I just got my 540i, and I went forward knowing that the 2020 might get the new engine. I think the LCI will get the new digital dash, new iDrive version, and maybe a subtle facelift, but I suspect the new engine will come out this year.
I can't imagine the 340 having more HP than the 540 for such an extended period of time.

Rumor has it a new iteration of the B58 is coming to the 5 series (soon) however the speculation is the M1 version (same version as used in X5/X7) as opposed to the O1 version used in the M340i and Z4 in non EU markets.

All other things being equal, more HP is good. But all other things being equal is a logical fallacy.
Handling, suspension, transmission tuning, etc. etc. all matter. When comparing within a brand, not so much. But when comparing between brands, one needs to do a substantial test drive to see what the car really feels like when driven and especially when driven in a spirit manner. |
