Exclamation Faulty harbor freight jack stand recall

Found in my news feed:
https://www.thedrive.com/news/33572/...denly-collapse
Basically, many of their 3 and 6 ton jack stands produced from 2013(!!!) to 2019 can collapse on you. You can verify the jack stand part numbers in the link.
All my jack stands are basically unsafe, and that's just after I missed out on the quick jack sale because it most likely would not fit in my e90. Damn.
Any good and inexpensive non-HF jack stands btw?

This has been popping up all over my facebook/instagram feed. Not really surprised. Glad I got away from things and got quickjacks. Only used them once or twice but they sketched me out. Anything from harbor freight does.

I've been under the car with them a few times, including one time last year with 6 tons jacked up above 20 inches. But I do routinely put the floor jack under the rear diff and put my race ramps under the front wheels. Thinking about picking husky 3 tons from the HD since these were on this list
https://www.garagetooladvisor.com/auto/best-jack-stands very inexpensive and I can't get other jacks stands before this weekend (and not going to be working on the bimmer where you need flat jack point)

I wonder if HF are the only affected brand. Every auto parts store sells a made in China version of these (i have two different brands downstairs) and it's hard to believe they are all being made by different manufacturers.

Regarding replacement stands, I'm pretty happy with the Esco 10499 (a short version of the 10498 in the above link). It's one of the only of the only jack stands out there with a flat top

Would you like to guess what jack stands the E36 is on right now? Time to buy something else I suppose.

Btw, I really love their low profile jacks. Never had any problems with them for all the years I've owned one.

Interesting.... HB or not, you always want to protect yourself with more than just 4 jackstands..... Leave a jack under the front or rear jack points, leave a spare rim under front rotors or front suspension components. it is even better than have 6 jackstands and leave the two extra ones under front or rear suspension components JUST in case.... because you never know !

me too ! the low profile long reach one is money and allows you to reach the front/rear jack points. 6+ years on mine with zero issues.

I never just put the stands under the car. The jack is ALWAYS there as a backup. That being said, I just got mine maybe 2 months ago. Getting my money back is cool, but I got an email from them for 20% off any 1 item in the store. Looks I'm getting a workbench!

HB has always had 20% off 365 days a year. All you have to do is google coupon codes or go to their site !

Likely a scam. There's a lot of those with DeWalt tool kits lately - they even come up in google shopping results.

I didn't know you could use anything from HF more than once.

These are what I use. However I paid more than twice this on amazon. Feel pretty safe with them and still keep wheels under car for safety

Isn't it common sense to always have a failsafe if youre going to be crawling under your car? Before i had quickjacks, i would always throw my wheels under as well. Even with quickjacks, i still put a set of jackstands as a failsafe or throw the wheel under. Maybe its habit or paranoia.

It is a common sense and i also don't use jack stands alone. But regardless, even with these failsafes, collapsing jack stand is not likely to be a pleasant experience)

+1.

Those stands cost a lot more money than what they are asking for them.

I saw this yesterday too, and was anxious about my HF 3-ton low profile floor jack (I don't have the referenced jack stands)...but I have their Pittsburgh brand floor jack, not Daytona. Is Pittsburgh even more of a lesser HF product (if that's even possible lol). I only use the jack 4 times a year to swap out my summer/winter setups on both cars.

I wouldn't worry much about the Pittsburgh Jack's they're actually pretty well made. Much better than other brands I've used from stores with better reputations than HF. I've personally had my husky jack fail on me while my pittsburgh has not. It's also far better made than the husky jack that cost more for steel vs aluminum HF.
Many shops that use Jack's everyday use the pittsburgh and Daytona line. Ive also read from multiple sources that the daytona line is made in the same factory as snap on jack.

As far as Jack stands my husky JS's so far have held up fine although like others have stated, put an extra wheel or something underneath in case they fail.
