Thinking of getting new wheels...help me out!
So after racking my brain for too many hours (!) looking at wheels/weights/performance/etc... I think that the Forgestar F14's or Breyton GTS wheels are the ones I want.
Both are CSL-style rims. I like them because they look good, are affordable (under $1500 for a set of 4 shipped), and each weigh under 20lbs for a 18x8.5. I want 4 identical size wheels so I can rotate the tires! The staggered RFT stock ones suck ass! They are noisy, wear fast, and honestly are not super grippy. My stock 162 wheels (2006 330i sport package car) weigh in at 24.6/26.2lbs and the stock tires are 25 lbs each. That's 205.6 lbs. A set of Yokohama or Continental tires are ~21lbs each and the forgestar wheels are 18.4lbs: a total of 157.8lbs... a reduction of 47.7lbs of unsprung weight!. Should equate to a reduction of 381 to 470lbs of normal weight. That would definitely be noticeable! I have heard the Breyton wheels are weak (structurally). So I think the F14s are for me. Does this seem like a reasonable thing to do to improve performance AND looks? I can't decide between Titanium, Gunmetal, or Black. Can anyone post pics of 18" F14s on e90 (sedans) pleeeeaaase? ALL HELP AND INPUT IS APPRECIATED! Last edited by dre_2ooo; 09-20-2010 at 08:11 AM.. |

Well, I said any input is appreciated... so, thank you ?
The Advan RS's are pretty badass; however, at $600-700/wheel, I don't think so. Last edited by dre_2ooo; 09-18-2010 at 09:31 PM.. |

Breytons and forgestar wheels are both weak. Just search more and see peoples feedback. You get what you pay for especially with wheels.

I don't believe the f14 have a high enough load rating for the e90. I went with the oem style 313 square 18x8.5. Cost was a little higher than the f14 but not by much. The 313s weigh 23.5 lbs.
I've also heard that the breytons aren't the highest quality from various forum members. Last edited by cb4; 09-19-2010 at 08:03 PM.. |

I don't get this. I searched and searched forgestar on here and pretty much everyone says it's a good wheel.
...Then I went to Google and found a lot of other forums/info. I'll be a cryptic asshole like everyone else and not post what I found out, but I guess, "strong, light, cheap --pick two," applies. Looks like I'll have to step up in price because I am NOT buying new wheels to just save a couple lbs over the stock 162 wheels. I want like <20lbs. Any suggestions? Are you going to be tracking your car? Do you really need wheels that weigh less than 20 lbs? If you really want super light, attractive, strong wheels its going to cost you. You can probably get a decent used set for ~2k. Keep your eyes open for some used Advans or Volks.

I will be tracking the car.
I've been looking at APEX ARC-8 wheels too. Seem to be priced around $300/wheel, have a 1500lbs load rating and weigh only ~18lbs. Anyone ever use the TRMotorsport MT1's? They're on Tirerack and look/weigh similar to the Advan RS. Last edited by dre_2ooo; 09-19-2010 at 10:46 PM.. |

Not sure why you guys are all hating on the Forgestar F14, because it's actually a great wheel for the value. You're going to get a flow form wheel for sub $1k which is pretty much unheard of as the competition will be anywhere from 2-3k. As per the load rating, if you really did your homework, you'd know that they actually increased the 18" load rating per barrel to 1520 lbs to meet the demand of the community.

It looks like this TRMotorsports (Tire Rack Motorsports) wheel is actually made be Enkei. Very tempting. What's the widest size tire could I run on a square 18x8 setup on the MT1's (32mm offset) with no modifications/rubbing etc...?

The 18" Forgestar F14 now has an increased load rating per wheel. The JWL VIA certified load rating for all 18" F14 sizes is 1520Lbs, up from 1200Lbs per wheel. I'll shoot you over a PM with more details.

What is the general and structural warranty on the F14s? Also, does anyone know if VIA/JWL actually requires the wheels to be sent to them in Japan for testing, or do they just accept any certified lab's results? Sorry for being such a pain, but a wheel is as much a performance/looks item as a safety item too! Last edited by dre_2ooo; 09-21-2010 at 11:44 AM.. |

I actually saw that in the chart but assumed it was a typo because that is what the old wheel weighed. Wonder how they managed to improved load rating without adding weight. Maybe its a forged wheel now.

The ARC-8 wheel has a 1550lbs load rating. They were tested in Japan by the VIA at 690kgs which is there standard. They won't test at our higher in-house tested rating since they strictly follow their own standard for everyone.
These wheels are in stock and ready to ship. They were individually/correctly tested at the actual offsets we sell. There is no build time, and no certification of obscure non e90 offsets. Our ARC-8 18x8.5" et38 wheel weights 18.45lbs. The 8.5" F14 listed on that chart has a 48mm offset which is 10mm less material then our wheel. If you add the weight of the material needed to have a more accurate apples to apples comparison you've added almost another pound of weight. 18x8.5" wheel on a scale 18x9.5" wheel on a scale 10mm spacer on a scale E92 running the 8.5"/9.5" combo as an example |
