My wife's car is in the shop. She had to run an errand and wanted to borrow my car. I didn't want to go to Costco, so I reluctantly agreed.
I sat down with her for about 15 minutes getting her acclimated to the car. It's sure not like the old days when anyone can borrow a car and simply turn the key and drive away... Anyway, I gave a her a basic training course on how to drive it, and set it to Sport mode for her. She pulled out of the driveway, and obviously was trying to show off, so she stepped on the gas, and drove away at a high rate of speed.  So where am I going with all this? Well, I was stunned with how good the exhaust sounded when she did that. Honestly, when I got this car, I never thought the exhaust was something to brag about. But I thought it sounded great when she did that. I never noticed an exhaust note like that while driving. Probably because they have done such a good job with sound insulation. It's whisper quiet inside. You just don't hear it inside.

I got a kick out of your story. My wife drives my cars about twice a year. She has driven my two year old 540 maybe three times until a couple of weeks ago. I needed her SUV so she had to drive the 540. That night at when she got home she said "wow, your car is really fun to drive. I didn't realize it was that fast". She had a big grin in her face.

Are you sure it didn't just sound better because she was driving it and when she got on the gas a little bit, your subconscious mind thought it was attractive as hell? Lol just kidding- I know I'm a sucker for girls driving fast cars.
In all seriousness, I do agree BMW has done a phenomenal job with insulation and sound deadening. I think when we take a step back and hear the car from a third person point of view then it isn't as quiet/bad as we make it out to be.

The last time I let my wife drive my car I had to wrestle her to get my key back. Good thing she is only 110 pounds! Gotta love a woman that loves to drive fast

My wife had driven my car a few times. She loves the power, but complains that you sit too low in the car. She is used to her Mercedes GLA, which does sit a bit higher. It's all a matter of what you're used to I guess.
