Finally an LSD!

My lease is up in 9 months. This news has swayed me back to yet another 5-series.

FWIW, ID7 feels like a step backwards from ID6.

if it's an option on 7 series then "migh"t still be a standard on M5, no way on regular 5 though...

Probably not, but could be part of a package. Different car, different target audience.

However, illusion is half the battle. BMW needs to respond to Audi's new MMI system in the A6 and Mercedes newer command system. 90%+ of the 5 series buyers won't have a clue features are trimmed from the 2020 G30 iteration. Customers will simply hear about BMW's new iDrive 7 and assume it's awesome.
No more touch screens please!

BMW still gets the basic ergonomics right. Haptic touch screen feedback is no replacement for real knobs and buttons. Muscle memory makes using basic controls easy and less distracting.
For me touchscreen can be useful, as in iDrive6. However I 100% agree that the mechanical controller is needed for the experience to be useful and not frustrating.

I drove a 2019 A6 and thought MMI was horrible. The haptics are worthless IMO unless there's one or two functions ber page. However when there's an LCD littered with virtual buttons haptics only tells me I did something. What I did I have no clue....

And voice is not the answer to everything so I hope BMW doesn't try to push 6 levels deep of voice commands.
Funny that you mention that.

The other day I activated voice control and said "I am cold!". The system responded, "Please
Use ventilation manual controls". Good answer
BMW!

I will wait for ID8 which should be coming up in 2 or so years from now. ID7 looks good on paper but poorly executed and tested by the BMW development group in Chicago.

Although I know all too well that trying keep up with the latest an the greatest is extremely expensive, I wish I had waited a few more months with the ordering of my M550i. I could not care less about the 2020 model technology/convenience upgrades, it is the new 523 HP engine that causes regrets.

As it relates to most of what you see in iDrive, I was told BMWNA involvement is mostly testing, market validation, NA market BMW Assist/Connected Drive, focus groups/feedback.

Engineering, planning, etc. for iDrive is mostly done out of HQ and BMW Car IT group in Munich and Ulm, Germany. Or do you have info that says otherwise?

I've also heard BMW has a small office in Silicon Valley focused on next gen autonomous driving. The engineering done in SV complements what they're working on at HQ development studio. BMW recognizes there's incredible talent in SV they shouldn't ignore.

I would be very surprised if BMW had a development team in Chicago. That's not a hotbed for software engineering talent. I would beleive San Jose, Seattle, or even Berlin.

Are there any US dealer reps on this forum? Want to confirm that Dynamic Dampers can still be ordered with My2020 540i x-Drive, as a stand-alone option ($700). Online configurator doesn't show it (only for 530i and 530e), but it is still listed in the latest ordering guide for 540i.

I'm not a CA but the Order Guide pinned elsewhere on these forums indicate that you cannot order DDC on the 540iX. Only as part of Dynamic Handling Package or an option in the M Sport Package. What's odd is that it looks like DDC is a stand alone option on the 530. Either way, don't trust the online configurator. it's almost always wrong or missing options. The Ordering Guides are more reliable.

Do you work for a dealer? Yes, I am aware that the order guide (at least the May version) still shows DDC as a $700 option on 540i with M-sport package. I was hoping that an actual salesperson try to set up a mock order and report that this option is indeed allowed on 540i (x-drive or not). As to why BMW decided not to offer DDC on non-M sport 540i (according to the guide) is a puzzle to me...

Assisted Driving View for Pre LCI MY2020 G30

-With the upgraded head unit, each car will now have updated Sport Displays in the center display and updated steering wheel buttons.

-In the center console, a USB-C port has replaced the USB-A port to allow for faster charging times (3A current). The USB port near the cup holders remains as a USB-A port.

-The 530e battery has been increased by ~25% from 9.2 to 12 kWh.

-The M550i xDrive receives an upgraded N63 engine, increasing its power to 523 hp (+67 hp vs MY19) leading to a 0-60 mph of 3.6 seconds (-0.3 sec)!
Helping to control all this power, it also receives a standard limited slip differential.

-In terms of equipment, on the 530i/530e/540i models, the following options have been made standard.

Comfort Access (322)

-On the M550xi, the following options have been made standard
Heated Front Seats (494)
M Sport Differential (2T4)

-For the MY20 5 Series, the premium contenting package structure has been slightly modified. Higher tier packages now include the content and price of the lower tiers. For example, Executive Package includes the content and price from Premium Package and Convenience Package and the packages are not combinableience. Overall, pricing remains unchanged.

Package changes include:

As Comfort Access has been made standard, Convienence Package (ZCV) includes Automatic Tailgate (316), Heated Front Seats (494), and Satellite Radio with 1 year subscription (655). Pricing is $850.

M Sport (ZMP) and Luxury Package (ZPL) now include SensaTec Dashboard (4AW)

As the digital instrument cluster is now standard, 6WB is no longer offered in Executive Package.

Assisted Driving View is not available on MY2020.
RSU is not available on MY2020 and require dealer installed updates.
