Turn on Notifications (for the connection to BMW) Next time you get a text, you will get a notification on your car, you can read it or the car can read it for you

As others have already mentioned idrive is much more feature rich than Apple CarPlay especially when it comes to navigation. However if you are accustomed to using an iPhone on a day-to-day basis the seamlessness of using CarPlay is awesome. I bought it before and I've already ordered it again.

Sorry to drag up an old thread, but I just found although the G30 (or iDrive6?) seems to have lost the 'media/more media/podcasts' menu, you can go to album search and type in 'podcast' (or less than that I suspect) and it will find your subscribed podcasts.

Thanks for the hint but I'm sorry I must be missing something as I can't see how to do this. The only media search I can find is for the media that has been stored in the car and searching for podcast through that finds nothing. Please would you be more specific on exactly how you did the search? (I.e. which menu options you took to get there. Thanks.

Sorry for the poor quality, hopefully this shows the idea. I'll get a bit of time later and investigate further, but although I can see all my podcasts this way, when I tried to play one I got thrown back to the media menu.

idrive is hands down better... but I still will use Waze or Google Maps.. and if you stream it doesn't matter... If you are listenting to podcasts, don't know how difficult setting that on your phone would be anyhow. Those who rely that much on apple carplay are obviously hyper dependent on it and how it looks vs something different in iDrive, and in the US anyhow, you can't access those text messages as you drive anyhow, so what exactly is the difference? Podcasts? Crapple Maps? I was on the fence too but I spoke to extensive product specialists and they also told me with every update Apple can also cause a conflict as they are responsible for the push not BMW. It's very flawed.

Is Tidal playing through CarPlay? Using downloaded Tidal songs on phone or streaming?

I love apple carplay for the text messaging, calling and streaming apple music. For navigation I use the BMW one or waze.

I was looking into this feature to see how functional it is on this car as it seems to be different across all manufacturers. Good to know the default iDrive system can handle the similar needs!

Ultimately it's paying for a screen for the screen you already pay for. I also think 'hey bmw' is a joke too when everyone has Siri. Really it's all just data collection. I'd be happier with an aux cable and a volume knob as that's really all anyone uses. (I sincerely hope you don't pay $2k-$4k for a stereo only to gimp the audio quality with Bluetooth.) As a general rule, avoid 'tech' 'upgrades' as they are mostly cheap novelties with big markups. Get vented seats or something useful instead. |

I thought I wanted it. Haven't used it yet.
Fact is, iDrive is so good in terms of features and usability, I just haven't felt compelled to waste my time with it.

BMW navigation isn't as good as Waze and being able to control the phone from the unit is much better. CarPlay will improve with iOS 13 as well.
I was big fan of BMW Pro Nav but now use Waze via CarPlay all the time - miss the HUD features but gain with better routing and speed camera notifications. Podcasts via Overcast are better too. BMW speed limit indication is shocking, often having a road with a limit of 60/70mph when it's an urban road either at 20/30mph. This is with reading speed signs and using the map data (2019-1, latest). The roads in question have been 20/30mph for many years so it's not a case of old map data. Waze gives a much better SLI indicator and on the Pro Display, is pretty good. |

I find that if you use your phone a lot, CarPlay especially now that is wireless is much easier. And the screenshots of IOS13 car play are pretty cool.

I like Apple carplay a lot on this car as well as my other cars. I love that waze works and while I never use Siri on my phone I use Siri a lot with the CarPlay.
Just in case those aren’t familiar you just hold down the voice button on the steering wheel for a few seconds and you get Siri. If you hold it down briefly you get the bmw voice. |

only benefit for me is having waze show up on the idrive screen. I admit I like to text while driving (yes, bad idea) and you can't do that with apple carplay. at least not hand-on.
